Holmes and Theranos’ former president Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani were charged in June 2018 with nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Federal prosecutors allege the pair—who were romantically involved during the alleged crimes—engaged in conspiracy to defraud Theranos investors out of more than $100 million and defraud doctors and patients into falsely believing the company’s faulty blood-testing technology could reliably perform accurate health tests with just drops of blood from a finger-prick. According to the court document filed this week, Holmes—who is now being tried separately from Balwani—notified the court last December that she plans to submit “expert evidence relating to a mental disease or defect or any other mental condition” that has bearing on the issue of guilt. The expert providing such evidence was named in the document as psychologist Mindy Mechanic, of California State … [Read more...] about Judge in Theranos fraud case orders 14-hour psychological test for Holmes

There's evidence that THC has a significant effect on the network, but researchers aren't quite sure how it happens. There are cannabinoid receptors all over the brain, including in "areas that constitute the key nodes of the [default mode network]," Piomelli said. It could be "that THC deactivates the [default mode network] by combining with those receptors," but it's also possible that THC quiets the network through an "indirect effect that involves cannabinoid receptors in other brain regions." … [Read more...] about How does cannabis get you high?
Normally, most factor VIII is stabilized in the body by another protein, von Willebrand factor (VWF), which also protects the clotting factor from disintegrating. However, VWF sets a cap on factor VIII’s time in the body, limiting its half-life to about 15 hours. When factor VIII is infused, it typically latches on to VWF. But researchers at Sanofi and Sobi, the sponsors of the new study, developed a fusion protein that had one small portion of VWF already fused to it. Their hope was that it would be enough to stabilize the clotting factor and prevent it from binding to the body’s own VWF. “Just part of [VWF] stabilizes factor VIII,” Konkle said. “You don’t need the rest of the protein.” … [Read more...] about New fusion protein treatment holds promise for ‘royal’ blood clotting disorder
