Best microwaves for 2022

December 30, 2021 by www.cnet.com Leave a Comment

Microwaves have come a long way since the first commercial model was released in 1947. If you're not familiar with this essential appliance's origin, here's a quick rundown: While working on magnetron production for the military in World War II, Percy Spencer, a Raytheon employee and physicist, discovered that a candy bar in his pocket had melted . Spencer quickly filed a patent for an invention based on the strange accident, and the microwave oven was born. Today, the best microwaves save valuable time in food prep when compared to a conventional oven. They are used to warm up leftovers, make popcorn, melt chocolate and steam veggies, among many, many other possibilities. Modern microwaves come with plenty of size, power, color and function options. You can get a convection microwave, range microwave, smart microwave, standard microwave, drawer microwave or a grill microwave. You even have smart microwave options such as the GE Smart Countertop Microwave and the … [Read more...] about Best microwaves for 2022

The US looks to kill Chinese chipmaking ambitions with ASML sales ban

July 6, 2022 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

What just happened? China has long sought to lessen its reliance on foreign chipmakers and focus on its home-grown options, part of the Made in China 2025 plan to update its domestic manufacturing capabilities. But those ambitions could be scuppered by the US, which wants to ban the sale of lithography tools produced by Netherlands-based ASML to the country. ASML, the world's largest supplier of lithography machines used in the chipmaking process, is already prohibited from selling its most advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment, which costs about $164 million per unit, to its Chinese customers as it cannot obtain an export license from the Dutch government due to pressure from the United States. Bloomberg writes that the US government is now pushing ASML to also stop selling its older deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography tools to Chinese clients. Despite being a generation old, the technology is still used to create chips found in phones, autonomous cars, PCs, … [Read more...] about The US looks to kill Chinese chipmaking ambitions with ASML sales ban

Apps and advertisers are coming for your lock screen, and it’s going to be exhausting

July 5, 2022 by www.theverge.com Leave a Comment

Your phone’s lock screen is the hottest new real estate in tech. Apple made the iPhone’s lock screen a centerpiece of iOS 16 , giving users more control over how theirs looks and works. But while Apple talked about pretty clock fonts and nifty color-matched wallpapers, it also showed off a world in which your lock screen is more than just a security measure: it’s becoming another surface on which companies can put information, apps, and even ads. Apple’s far from the only company thinking about this, too. TechCrunch reports that Glance , a lock screen content company (which apparently is a thing!) is already in talks with US carriers and plans to launch on some Android phones in the US in the next two months. The competition for your eyeballs and attention has already come out of apps and onto your home screen, through widgets and notifications. Now it looks like it’s headed one step further: onto the first thing you see when you turn on your phone, before you even pick it up … [Read more...] about Apps and advertisers are coming for your lock screen, and it’s going to be exhausting

There’s a better way to bypass Windows 11 install restrictions

July 1, 2022 by www.theverge.com Leave a Comment

Windows 11 comes with more restrictive install requirements when compared to its predecessor, including restrictions on older processors as well as requiring an internet connection and Microsoft account. Luckily, there are workarounds that allow for upgrades to Windows 11 on unsupported CPUs , and the company isn’t blocking those circumventions . But, if you’re looking to do a clean Windows 11 install and configure the system with just a local account, you can now do that easily with a tool called Rufus. The app has been long used by IT departments to quickly create bootable Windows installers. The latest beta release , as reported by Ars Technica , now has the ability to remove the requirement of an online Microsoft account, alongside other circumventions. It can bypass computers that lack TPM 2.0 (including Intel Macs), computers that have less than 4GB of RAM or 64GB of storage, and you can also automatically disable data collection. You’ll still need to keep your … [Read more...] about There’s a better way to bypass Windows 11 install restrictions

Xbox Games with Gold is ditching Xbox 360 support

July 6, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… Xbox Games with Gold is about to get a lot better. Or a lot worse, depending on how much you like Xbox 360 games. Both Xbox Series X |S and Xbox One consoles are backwards compatible with older Xbox games. As such, users with an Xbox Live Gold subscription have been able to download Xbox 360 games each month as part of the Games with Gold monthly lineup. But that's about to change. A user on the r/Games subreddit posted an official Microsoft email (opens in new tab) that confirms Games with Gold's Xbox 360 support is ending this October. The email states that Xbox Live Gold users (or those who get its benefits as part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription tier) will stop seeing Xbox 360 games on the monthly service from October 1. The reason being that the company has "reached the limit of our ability to bring Xbox 360 games to the catalog." It's not all bad news, though. In the same email, Microsoft confirmed that … [Read more...] about Xbox Games with Gold is ditching Xbox 360 support

I almost ruined my Apple Watch. Here’s how to make sure you don’t

July 6, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… I felt it happen; it was an almost sickening sensation. My beloved Apple Watch Series 7, squeezed like a slice of salami between a block of wood and my wrist that was supporting a nearly 75-pound package, meeting with a bit of grit that was dragging across it. My arms, suddenly taking on Herculean strength, quickly lifted the heavy package up to relieve the pressure, but it was too late. The sand or grit that was covering the wood frame had carved out a tiny, awful canyon across the once nearly pristine face of my Apple Watch Series 7. I blame myself. First of all, it's important to acknowledge that this is an aluminum Apple Watch Series 7 . Not stainless steel or titanium. This matters because the crystal is not made of the sapphire you might find on a high-end Breitling watch. Instead, it has Ion-X glass, which is supposed to approximate some form of sturdy Gorilla Glass. That watch glass, which is protecting the wearable's large, … [Read more...] about I almost ruined my Apple Watch. Here’s how to make sure you don’t

I’d swap AirPods for Nothing Ear (2) earbuds if they can improve in these four areas

July 6, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… Nothing's inaugural Ear (1) earbuds were, let's face it, a case of style over substance sonically. Glossy images of Nothing’s futuristic near-transparent units, with very friendly lady bugs perched atop the case, suggested quality and detailed workmanship – and there's no denying that due care an attention was taken in making them look good. The feature set – including Nothing's commendable new app – was better still, and the Nothing Ear (1) Black Edition brought Bluetooth 5.2 and improved the ANC to levels rarely seen at that price. IPX4 splash-proofing was also a nice touch, and the little red dot on the right earpiece made me wonder why other manufacturers don't offer this simple embellishment, but sound quality is ultimately the making or breaking of a set of wireless headphones and here, Nothing Ear (1) still fall short of the best wireless earbuds in terms of timing and neutrality across the frequencies, as well as for bass grip … [Read more...] about I’d swap AirPods for Nothing Ear (2) earbuds if they can improve in these four areas

You can already pre-order an iPhone 14 – if you’ve got a spare $10,000

July 5, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… While excitement grows for the iPhone 14 , we can say pretty confidently that Apple hasn't started pre-orders for the thing yet. But that doesn't mean excited fans can't already put their money where their mouth is... if they've got enough of said money. Custom iPhone maker Caviar has unveiled its iPhone 14 collection (opens in new tab) , with 13 different exorbitantly expensive spins on Apple's upcoming smartphone. They range from the $9,500 Champagne Rose model you can see above, with stingray leather and titanium, up to a $22,620 Gold Champagne Crystal model which includes loads of gold jewelry as well as nine diamonds. Most of these devices are limited-run ones, with only 99 or so models being made. You can choose whether to get an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max version - the latter bumps the price up by even more. It's worth pointing out that the iPhones shown in these pictures probably aren't accurate to what the iPhone 14 will look like … [Read more...] about You can already pre-order an iPhone 14 – if you’ve got a spare $10,000
