Elon Musk’s Twitter locked the New York Post out of its account on Thursday after it posted a story about the social media platform deleting more than 5,000 tweets about the Trans Radical Activist Network (TRAN)’s upcoming “Trans Day of Vengeance.” Twitter prevented the New York Post from tweeting from its main account after it shared its own news article on the removal of thousands of tweets raising awareness to the fact that a planned “Trans Day of Vengeance” is set to take place in Washington, D.C. just days after a transgender school shooter killed six people, three of them 9-year-old children, in Nashville. Elon Musk plans China visit, seeks meeting with premier, claim sources
Tesla chief executive Elon Musk is making plans to visit China as early as April and is seeking a meeting with China's Premier Li Qiang, two people with knowledge of planning for the trip told Reuters. The exact timing of the visit is subject to Li Qiang's availability, one of the sources said. Tesla and China's State Council Information Office did not immediately reply to requests for comment on Friday. China is Tesla's second-largest market after the United States and its Shanghai plant is the electric carmaker's largest production hub. A visit by Musk would mark his first visit to China since the COVID-19 pandemic and since Xi Jinping secured a third term as China's president. Before Li became premier in March, he served as Shanghai's party secretary where he oversaw the construction and opening of the Tesla factory. Musk last visited China in early 2020, when he set the internet abuzz by dancing on stage during an event at the Shanghai factory. … [Read more...] about Elon Musk plans China visit, seeks meeting with premier, claim sources
FTC chair refused Musk’s meeting request, told him to stop delaying investigation
Twitter owner Elon Musk requested a meeting with Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan late last year, but he was rebuffed and told to stop dragging his heels on providing documents and depositions needed for the FTC investigation into Twitter's privacy and data practices, a New York Times report said yesterday. "In a Jan. 27 letter declining the meeting, Ms. Khan told a Twitter lawyer to focus on complying with investigators' demands for information before she would consider meeting with Mr. Musk," the NYT wrote. Twitter has to comply with conditions in a May 2022 settlement in which it agreed to pay a $150 million penalty for targeting ads at users with phone numbers and email addresses collected from those users when they enabled two-factor authentication. Last year's settlement was reached after the FTC said Twitter violated the terms of a 2011 settlement that prohibited the company from misrepresenting its privacy and security practices. Khan's January 27 letter to … [Read more...] about FTC chair refused Musk’s meeting request, told him to stop delaying investigation
Meta: Meta launches subscription service in US
Meta Platforms Inc on Friday launched its subscription service in the U.S., which would allow Facebook and Instagram users pay for verification in the same vein as Elon Musk-owned Twitter. The Meta Verified service will give users a blue badge after they verify their accounts using a government ID and will cost $11.99 per month on the web or $14.99 a month on Apple's iOS system and Google-owned Android, Meta said in a statement. The service, which Meta said it was testing in February, follows in the footsteps of Snap Inc-owned Snapchat as well as messaging app Telegram and marks the latest effort by a social media company to diversify its revenue away from advertising. After a $44 billion buyout by Musk last year, Twitter had rolled out its Blue subscription service which lets people pay for the blue check mark previously limited to verified accounts of politicians, journalists and other public figures. The initial launch of Twitter Blue in … [Read more...] about Meta: Meta launches subscription service in US

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo The tech ethics group Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy is asking the US Federal Trade Commission to stop OpenAI from issuing new commercial releases of GPT-4 , which has wowed some users and caused distress for others with its quick and human-like responses to queries. In a complaint to the agency on Thursday, a summary of which is on the group's website, the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy called GPT-4 "biased, deceptive, and a risk to privacy and public safety." OpenAI, which is based in California and backed by Microsoft Corp., unveiled the fourth iteration of its GPT (Generative Pre-tr ai ned Transformer) AI program in early March, which has excited users by engaging them in human-like conversation, composing songs and summarizing lengthy documents. The formal complaint to … [Read more...] about gpt: US advocacy group asks FTC to stop new OpenAI GPT releases
Twitter posts the code it claims determines which tweets people see, and why
Twitter has made good on one of CEO Elon Musk's many promises , posting on a Friday afternoon what it claims is the code for its tweet recommendation algorithm on GitHub . The code, posted under a GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 , contains numerous insights as to what factors make a tweet more or less likely to show up in users' timelines. In a blog post accompanying the code release , Twitter's engineering team (under no particular byline) notes that the system for determining which "top Tweets that ultimately show up on your device's For You timeline" is "composed of many interconnected services and jobs." Each time a Twitter home screen is refreshed, Twitter pulls "the best 1,500 Tweets from a pool of hundreds of millions," the post states. The largest source of those tweets are "In-Network Sources," or users someone follows. The top tweets from that pile are ranked on the likelihood of a user's engagement with that tweet's author; the more likely, the more … [Read more...] about Twitter posts the code it claims determines which tweets people see, and why
