Blizzard studio halts union plans amid alleged management meddling
Further Reading Spellbreak beta stands out from the copycat battle royale crowd Last month, workers at Spellbreak studio Proletariat became the third group within Activision Blizzard to form a union . Today, though, the Communication Workers of America is pulling back on its push for a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election that could have forced parent company Activision Blizzard to recognize that union. In doing so, the CWA cites actions by Proletariat CEO Seth Sivak that have made "a free and fair election impossible." In a statement provided to Ars Technica, a CWA spokesperson said Sivak "chose to follow Activision Blizzard's lead and responded to the workers' desire to form a union with confrontational tactics." Those tactics include "a series of meetings that demoralized and disempowered the group," according to the CWA. Proletariat Software Engineer Dustin Yost said in an accompanying statement that those management meetings "took their toll" on the group … [Read more...] about Blizzard studio halts union plans amid alleged management meddling

Weaponization Committee Republicans Lay Groundwork for Investigations
Republicans on the newly created Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government met for the first time Friday to begin mapping out their investigative pursuits. The closed-door meeting included all of the subcommittee’s GOP members, aside from Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL), who was home recovering from a serious accident, according to a source present at the meeting. “There’s a lot for us to do. That’s really clear, and that’s just in the course of the discussion we had,” Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) said as he emerged from the room. The subcommittee was established via a resolution this month along partisan lines and was given sweeping authority to investigate federal government agencies, such as the Justice Department (DOJ) and FBI, for alleged civil liberties violations. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) noted to reporters after the meeting, however, that the subcommittee’s mandate was “much broader” than those two agencies. “Obviously Twitter was weaponized, and that’s … [Read more...] about Weaponization Committee Republicans Lay Groundwork for Investigations
Private justice: How Hollywood money put a Brit behind bars
Anton Vickerman, 38-year old owner of the once popular link site surfthechannel.com (STC), was sentenced to four years in prison on Tuesday by a British judge. But the prosecutors sitting across the courtroom from him didn't work for the Crown—they were lawyers for the movie studio trade group Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT). FACT, not public officials in the UK, was the driving force behind Vickerman's prosecution. Indeed, FACT effectively took on the role of a private law enforcement agency. Private investigators hired by FACT first identified Vickerman as the administrator of STC and built the case against him. His assets were frozen at FACT's request by a government agency—which was itself funded by FACT. And when the UK's public prosecutors decided not to press charges against Vickerman at all, FACT initiated a criminal prosecution on its own dime. This is a new development for anti-piracy efforts. Organizations like the MPAA, RIAA, IFPA, and FACT have long lobbied … [Read more...] about Private justice: How Hollywood money put a Brit behind bars

How it came upon that proclamation is unclear. T-Mobile Home Internet , another national WISP that made a lot of noise in 2022, has more total customers (over 2 million) and touts that 35% of its total availability is in rural areas (though granted, that doesn't mean that 35% of its customers are in rural locations). Annual? Bivalent? For all? Future of COVID shots murky after FDA deliberations
The US Food and Drug Administration's committee of independent vaccine experts gathered Thursday to discuss the future of COVID-19 shots. The meeting seemed primed for explosive debate. Earlier in the week, the FDA released documents that made clear the agency is holding steadfast to its idea that COVID vaccines will fit the mold of annual flu shots —with reformulations decided in the first half of each year, followed by fall rollouts in anticipation of winter waves. But outside experts, including some on the FDA's advisory committee, have questioned almost every aspect of that plan—from the uncertain seasonality of COVID-19 so far, to the futility of chasing fast-moving variants (or subvariants, as the case may be). Some have even questioned whether there's a need to boost the young and healthy so frequently when current vaccines offer protection against severe disease, but only short-lived protection against infection. One particularly outspoken member of FDA's committee, … [Read more...] about Annual? Bivalent? For all? Future of COVID shots murky after FDA deliberations
