In context: Automobiles have changed a lot over the decades, especially when it comes to their technology-packed interiors. As manufacturers rush to add more and bigger touchscreens alongside soft-touch controls, traditional physical buttons and dials are going the way of the dinosaur. But Hyundai isn't ready to get rid of these instruments, at least not until their vehicles have full self-driving capabilities. Sang Yup Lee, Head of Hyundai Design, confirmed that the company was keeping buttons and dials in its vehicles during the launch of the new-generation Hyundai Kona (via CarsGuide ). This might seem as if the Korean giant is shooting itself in the foot by not embracing the latest in-car tech, but Lee says it's a safety issue. "We have used the physical buttons quite significantly the last few years. For me, the safety-related buttons have to be a hard key," said Lee. Some luxury vehicles are going all-in on touch-screen displays and soft-touch buttons; the Mercedes-Benz … [Read more...] about Hyundai pledges to keep physical buttons in its vehicles for safety reasons

The big picture: AI has been a topic of interest within the tech industry for several years, but the general population didn't get its first real taste of the technology until deep learning models like DALL-E, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney launched with the ability to generate strikingly lifelike images from text inputs. However, people truly grasped the power of AI last November when OpenAI launched ChatGPT to the public. While Google has been late to the AI game, many believe that Bard could be the only real competitor to ChatGPT in the near future. Google has opened public access to its conversational AI chatbot, Bard . The move comes a month and a half after the company unveiled the service and rolled it out to a handful of beta testers. With this week's wider rollout, users in the US and the UK will now be able to join a waitlist to check out its features and assess its abilities. Google said Bard can not only be used to boost productivity, but should also help users … [Read more...] about Google’s ChatGPT rival ‘Bard’ is now in early access

Apple’s folding iPhone could automatically shut to protect itself from fumble fingers
Development on the foldable iPhone apparently continues as a recently discovered patent application suggests Apple is looking for a way to better protect its device from falls. Available on the website of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (opens in new tab) , the application is called Self-Retracting Display Device And Techniques For Protecting Screen Using Drop Detection. Quite a mouthful, but it does succinctly describe how Apple may aim to minimize damage to the screen. As it’s described, the device will have some kind of sensor inside like an accelerometer. If it detects the iPhone is falling, the sensor will signal an “electronically adjustable latching mechanism” to quickly snap the phone shut. The application does hint the mechanism may not close all the way if the iPhone is too close to the ground leaving it partially open. But that’s fine as according to the patent, “even folding the display to an angle less [than] 180 degrees can [still] afford some … [Read more...] about Apple’s folding iPhone could automatically shut to protect itself from fumble fingers
