Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and progressive activists celebrated Amazon’s Thursday announcement that it will not move forward with it planned second headquarters, known as HQ2, in Queens, New York. Ocasio-Cortez called retreat a win for “everyday New Yorkers” in the fight against “corporate greed … worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world,” referring to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Local activists, including the Democratic Socialists of America, spent the last few months aggressively mobilizing grassroots opposition to the deal, which would have brought 25,000 jobs to the city. But recent polling has found that the majority of Queens residents supported Amazon’s HQ2 plans. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez celebrated Amazon’s Thursday announcement that the company will … [Read more...] about ‘Queens is not for sale’: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York activists celebrate Amazon’s decision to cancel HQ2 in Long Island City
The march of specialized chips for artificial intelligence continues unabated, and reports from some luminaries of the semiconductor industry point to a broadening out of the movement of machine learning parts. The well-regarded chip-industry newsletter Microprocessor Report this week reports that cloud computing operators such as Amazon and some electronics giants such as Huawei show impressive results against the CPUs and the graphics processing units, or GPU, parts that tend to dominate AI in the cloud. (Microprocessor Report articles are only available via subscription to the newsletter.) And a think-piece this month in the Communications of the ACM, from two legends of chip design, John L. Hennessy and David A. Patterson, explains that circuits for machine learning represent something of a revolution in chip design broadly speaking. Hennessy and Patterson last year received the prestigious A.M. Turing award from the ACM for their decades of work on chip architecture design. … [Read more...] about Amazon, Huawei efforts show move to AI-centric chips continues
Educator and author Rebecca Friedrichs described the #RedForEd movement — pushed by teachers’ unions and their political allies — as a “deception” that uses teachers as pawns to advance the unions’ far-left political agenda to “fundamentally change [American] culture.” Friedrichs, the plaintiff in the 2016 Supreme Court case Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, offered her remarks in a Tuesday interview on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight with hosts Rebecca Mansour and Joel Pollak.LISTEN: Friedrichs said, “What the teachers’ unions really are — and I’m talking about state and national teachers’ unions — they’re really the political action committee of the far left. They take teachers’ dues money to fight for what they call social justice — their definition of social justice — which is all this far-left March for Our Lives, and all these things that … [Read more...] about Rebecca Friedrichs on #RedForEd: Teachers Are Being Used to Advance Union Agenda
Teachers on strike in Los Angeles attempted to stop non-union substitutes from arriving at the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools on Thursday morning, as the local union continued its strike into a fourth day. Marchers chanted “Turn around!” and “Scabs!” at the substitute teachers, who have been hired by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to supervise students whose working parents may have no other option for child care in the day.Police were on hand to make sure that the substitutes could proceed safely into the complex — though union activists attempted to dissuade drivers from entering, and tried to provide them with leaflets about the strike. Turnout for the strike was very strong, as the union and its allies maintained three separate picket lines around the school complex despite heavy rain. Drivers passing by honked their horns in solidarity with the protests. In addition to members of the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), members of … [Read more...] about Watch: Striking Teachers Urge ‘Scabs’ Not to Cross Picket Line in L.A.
The Los Angeles branch of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has joined the ongoing strike by the local teachers’ union, turning out to support picket lines and to hurl abuse at “scabs” hired by the school district. The “scabs” have been hired to supervise group activities for the roughly one-third of students who are still attending school during the strike because their parents cannot afford to take time off work or to pay for child care. Many of the teachers on the picket lines happen to be wearing red, traditionally favored by communists and socialists. Demonstrators told Breitbart News at one protest Wednesday that the color red simply stands for solidarity, and also happens to be the color favored by their union, the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA). Teachers who have gone on strike in other parts of the country recently have also favored red, often referring to their protests with the hashtag “#Red4Ed.” The National Education … [Read more...] about ‘Democratic Socialists’ Join L.A.
