After receiving heavy backlash for posting a vulgar tweet about 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis during the Oscars, satirical publication The Onion quickly deleted the tweet Sunday night and then apologized Monday on Facebook. The tweet from @TheOnion read, "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c*nt, right?" It came after the 85th Academy Awards host Seth MacFarlane made a joke about actor George Clooney and Wallis. "So let me just address those of you up for an award, so you got nominated for an Oscar, something a 9-year-old could do," MacFarlane said. "She's adorable, Quvenzhané. ... To give you an idea how young she is, it'll be 16 years before she's too old for Clooney.” Wallis, who wore an Armani dress with a puppy purse on the red carpet, was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Beasts of the Southern Wild . The Onion 's CEO Steve Hannah expressed the publication's regret in a Facebook post: Dear Readers, On … [Read more...] about ‘The Onion’ Apologizes for Vulgar Tweet to 9-Year-Old Actress

Oldest sequenced DNA belonged to 1 million-year-old mystery mammoth
The oldest DNA ever decoded belonged to a mammoth from a mysterious, previously unknown lineage that lived about 1.2 million years ago, a new study finds. Previously, the oldest known sequenced genome came from a horse that lived up to 780,000 years ago, in what is now Canada's Yukon Territory. Now, the mammoth discovery, "is, with a wide margin, the oldest DNA ever recovered," study senior researcher Love Dalén, a professor of evolutionary genetics at the Center for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm, said at a news conference Tuesday (Feb. 16). The remains of the mysterious mammoth were discovered near Siberia's Krestovka River (now the mammoth's namesake). After studying its ancient DNA, along with the newly sequenced genomes of two other mammoths — a roughly 700,000-year-old woolly mammoth ( Mammuthus primigenius ) and an approximately 1 million-year old woolly mammoth predecessor — the scientists made a surprising discovery: Woolly mammoths mated with a mammoth from … [Read more...] about Oldest sequenced DNA belonged to 1 million-year-old mystery mammoth
Listen to haunting notes from an 18,000-year-old conch shell trumpet
After 18,000 years of silence, an ancient musical instrument played its first notes. The last time anyone heard a sound from the conch shell trumpet, thick sheets of ice still covered most of Europe. University of Toulouse archaeologist Carole Fritz and her colleagues recently recognized the shell as a musical instrument. To understand more about how ancient people crafted a trumpet from a 31cm (1 foot) long conch shell, the archaeologists used high-resolution CT scans to examine the shell’s inner structure: delicate-looking whorls of shell and open chambers, coiled around a central axis, or columella. A series of overlapping photographs and careful measurements became a full-color, 3D digital model of the shell, and image enhancement software helped reveal how Magdalenian people had decorated the instrument with red ocher dots. And in a lab at the University of Toulouse, a horn player and musicology researcher became the first person in 18,000 years to play the conch shell. The … [Read more...] about Listen to haunting notes from an 18,000-year-old conch shell trumpet
Robinhood sued for wrongful death by family of 20-year-old who died by suicide
Last June, 20-year-old Alex Kearns died by suicide, blaming stock trading app Robinhood for his death. He mistakenly believed he’d lost $730,000, and that the company was coming for more than $170,000 of that money in a matter of days. His family now agrees that it was Robinhood’s fault — on Monday, they sued the company for wrongful death. According to the complaint, Kearns never owed any money at all, but that didn’t stop the Robinhood app from suggesting that he did, or sending him an “immediate action required” email telling him he needed to deposit $178,612.73 by June 17th. Here’s a screenshot one of his relatives shared on Twitter last June of what the app reportedly showed him at the time: I saw @RobinhoodApp response and can confirm they did reach out. The family isn’t ready to speak yet. Since they can’t release account details here’s the screenshot. pic.twitter.com/uqeDhro7aJ— Bill Brewster … [Read more...] about Robinhood sued for wrongful death by family of 20-year-old who died by suicide
