Editor's Note: July 2022 We're rounding the halfway mark on 2022, and this year's best ultrawide monitor models are starting to fill up store shelves, both the physical and digital kind. It's also a time to wave goodbye to some discontinued monitors, like the BenQ EX3510R, which was one of our favorite ultrawide monitors on this list. Fortunately, BenQ has released the EX3410R, which is a slightly smaller but more capable ultrawide than the EX3510R. It is much faster, both in refresh and pixel response, and has slightly better contrast and brightness as well. Best of all, it's a good deal less expensive, so you're getting a much better value any way you look at it. - John Loeffler, US Computing Editor Getting the best ultrawide monitor you can afford will probably feel like a bit of a flex for a lot of people, a way to make a statement more than serve a purpose. In a world dominated by 16:9 aspect in TVs, film, and displays of all kinds, it makes sense to ask what the … [Read more...] about Best ultrawide monitors 2022: the top 21:9 monitors we’ve tested

Rumors, delays, and early testing suggest Intel’s Arc GPUs are on shaky ground
Almost a year ago, Intel made a big announcement about its push into the dedicated graphics business. Intel Arc would be the brand name for a new batch of gaming GPUs, pushing far beyond the company's previous efforts and competing directly with Nvidia's GeForce and AMD's Radeon GPUs. Arc is the culmination of years of work, going back to at least 2017, when Intel poached AMD GPU architect Raja Koduri to run its own graphics division . And while Intel would be trying to break into an established and fiercely competitive market, it would benefit from the experience and gigantic install base that the company had cultivated with its integrated GPUs. Further Reading Intel provides more details on its Arc GPUs, which will be made by TSMC Intel sought to prove its commitment to Arc by showing off a years-long road map , with four separate named GPU architectures already in the pipeline. Sure, the GPUs wouldn't compete with top-tier GeForce and Radeon cards, but they … [Read more...] about Rumors, delays, and early testing suggest Intel’s Arc GPUs are on shaky ground
Richard Mille unveils the world’s thinnest mechanical watch
Why it matters: Swiss luxury watch mater Richard Mille has unveiled what it claims is the world's thinnest mechanical watch. The impossibly thin RM UP-01 Ferrari is a manual winding ultraflat measuring just 1.75mm from dial to caseback, narrowly edging out previous record holder Bulgari and its Octo Finissimo Ultra by 0.05mm. For comparison, an Apple Watch Series 7 is 10.7mm thick. You could stack six of these together and it still wouldn't be as thick as one Apple Watch. The watch's skeletonized baseplate and bridges are constructed from an alloy that is 90 percent titanium, six percent aluminum and four percent vanadium. The combination , which is frequently used in advanced aerospace applications, boosts the material's strength compared to commercially pure titanium. The RM UP-01 Ferrari can withstand accelerations of more than 5,000 Gs and is water resistant to 10 meters. Its movement – the internal components that make the timepiece functional – were co-developed … [Read more...] about Richard Mille unveils the world’s thinnest mechanical watch

Internet-addicted youth engage in other forms of self-injury
The potential for some users to go overboard when it comes to being online has been obvious since the days when being online meant dialing in to a BBS. In more recent years, however, widespread 'Net access has allowed psychologists to document this obsession on a population level and begin to characterize Internet addiction as a distinct set of behaviors, and relate them to other forms of addiction. A recently published survey of Chinese adolescents from Guangzhou has found that signs of Internet addiction strongly correlate with various forms of self-injury, a finding that may place the addiction squarely within the spectrum of impulse control disorders. The survey involved over 1,600 high school students, aged 13-18 years; the questions covered demographic information, additional influences on mental health, and two sets of queries on Internet addiction and self-injurious behavior. The Internet addiction series came from a formal Internet Addiction Test that has been validated … [Read more...] about Internet-addicted youth engage in other forms of self-injury
Netflix lost 970,000 subscribers in Q2, but it could have been much worse
In context: Netflix disclosed in its latest earnings report that it lost subscribers for the second straight quarter after more than a decade of sustained growth. Still, the video streaming giant is optimistic as the losses could have cut much deeper. When Netflix reported Q1 results back in April, the company said it expected to lose as many as two million additional subscribers in the second quarter. In actuality, Netflix shed just half that at 970,000 subscribers during the three-month period ending June 30. The second quarter was headlined by season four of Stranger Things . The highly anticipated original hit generated 1.3 billion hours viewed in its first four weeks to become Netflix's biggest English TV season yet. It also renewed interest in past seasons, with Netflix observing a greater than five-fold increase in views after season four dropped. It's been a rough year for Netflix as the company's stock has lost more than 65 percent of its value since early … [Read more...] about Netflix lost 970,000 subscribers in Q2, but it could have been much worse
