This week, I interviewed Yuval Noah Harari, the author of three best-selling books about the history and future of our species, and Fei-Fei Li, one of the pioneers in the field of artificial intelligence. The event was hosted by the Stanford Center for Ethics and Society, the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, and the Stanford Humanities Center. A transcript of the event follows, and a video is posted below. Nicholas Thompson: Thank you, Stanford, for inviting us all here. I want this conversation to have three parts: First, lay out where we are; then talk about some of the choices we have to make now; and last, talk about some advice for all the wonderful people in the hall. Yuval, the last time we talked, you said many, many brilliant things, but one that stuck out was a line where you said, “We are not just in a technological crisis. We are in a philosophical crisis.” So explain what you meant and explain how it ties to AI. Let's get going … [Read more...] about Will Artificial Intelligence Enhance or Hack Humanity?

Article Contents1 Panasonic Automotive2 Press Release3 Press Release4 Cinemo5 Press Release6 Visteon7 Press Release Android Automotive remains something of an obscurity, but companies are still happy to tout their latest progress with the platform (or something like it), especially on a stage as large as CES 2018. Before we get to that, it's probably worthwhile to distinguish between Android Automotive and Android Auto: Android Automotive is a standalone, in-vehicle infotainment and control system running Android — basically Android OS for your car. This is a more appealing proposition than the rather laggy experience that is Android Auto, which just projects what's on your phone to an interface that sits in your car. In case it's not clear from the distinction above, Android Automotive is the more compelling future, one that's not tethered to your phone. Panasonic, Cinemo, and Visteon are among the companies that want you to know they're riding that wave early. Here's … [Read more...] about Android Automotive updates from CES 2018: 8.0 Oreo, Google Assistant, fancy head units, and more
Shedding Your Identity in the Digital AgeStories From the HuntEvan's Daily Costume ChangeMedia, From TV to Mags to Blogs, Followed the HuntSocial Networking Sites at Center of Coast-to-Coast Coordinated Search Wired Tests Writer With a Series of Bold Challenges1 I'm driving East out of San Francisco on I-80, fleeing my life under the cover of dusk. Having come to the interstate by a circuitous route, full of quick turns and double backs, I'm reasonably sure that no one is following me. I keep checking the rearview mirror anyway. From this point on, there's no such thing as sure. Being too sure will get me caught. I had intended to flee in broad daylight, but when you are going on the lam, there are a surprising number of last-minute errands to run. This morning, I picked up a set of professionally designed business cards for my fake company under my fake name, James Donald Gatz. I drove to a Best Buy, where I bought two prepaid cell phones with cash and then put a USB cord on my credit … [Read more...] about Writer Evan Ratliff Tried to Vanish: Here’s What Happened
