Internet search giant Google is set to roll out the support for its Chat platform to talk to users who are outside their domain. This will be applicable to G Suite users, the company announced in a blog post, starting May 26. If you are a Google Chat user, you will be able to chat with external users either by sending a direct message to them or adding them to rooms. External users that you may end up chatting with, however, do require a Google account. This means that you will be able to chat only with those who have Google accounts and not with anyone who may not have an account. All the users who are not part of your domain will sport an “external” badge for easy and quick identification. Also, whenever you chat with these external contacts, you will need to assign a room as “External" when you create it. New Delhi: Google is in initial talks to buy a stake of about 5% in cash-strapped Vodafone Idea, India’s third-largest telecom operator, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Vodafone Idea was formed in August 2017 by the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular. The telco, which has been posting losses since the merger, declined to comment on “this speculation”. Both UK’s Vodafone Group and Idea parent Aditya Birla Group declined to comment. Google didn’t respond to ET’s queries. Voda Idea shares closed 2.7% higher at Rs 5.82 on the BSE Thursday, giving it a market value of Rs 16,724 crore. Google has launched a new initiative called Scam Spotter to help internet users identify online scams, phishing attacks and others. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused cybercriminals to be more active and as per Google, “more than $40 million in fraud losses have been reported related to COVID-19 scam.” Scam Spotter aims to train internet users to identify common scams that use social engineering to trick people into believing messages from government agencies, lottery companies and others. Google is simply asking people to apply three ‘golden rules’ while dealing with scammers. “Are they telling you it’s urgent? Take your time and ask questions to avoid being rushed into a bad situation. Are they claiming to be from a specific institution? Do your own research to double check the details you’re getting.
