There is a plethora of streaming services available for anyone with a credit card handy. Hulu and Netflix are general entertainment providers offering licensed content and originals for subscribers. Others, like anime provider Crunchyroll and NFL Sunday Ticket, are targeted at specific interests. Streaming services like Disney+ and Apple TV Plus are flashy newcomers that are trying to find their place in an overly crowded space. It’s getting trickier to figure out where to spend your money every month. Netflix and Hulu used to be sufficient; subscribers could watch their favorite shows and a popular original like Stranger Things or The Handmaid’s Tale. Now, between live sports, movies, original TV shows, and even nightly news, no single service offers everything. Take a look at the most popular shows streaming today: Friends and The Office are two of the most-watched shows on Netflix, but they’re leaving. Friends is returning to its WarnerMedia home next year when … [Read more...] about Guide to streaming: from Disney+ to NBA League Pass and Crunchyroll

The most reliable US rocket company, United Launch Alliance, could not compete with upstart provider SpaceX during a competition in late 2015 for an Air Force payload, a senior engineer with the company said Wednesday. SpaceX was able to offer launch capabilities for as little as one-third the price of what United Launch Alliance could, said Brett Tobey, vice president of engineering for the Colorado-based rocket company. It does not appear Tobey knew his remarks at a University of Colorado-Boulder seminar were being recorded. But Space News obtained a copy of the audio and posted the revealing, nearly hour-long recording on its website. By Wednesday night Reuters reported that Tobey had resigned from his position at United Launch Alliance, effective immediately. (Sierra supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.) As the US competes with China to build the fastest supercomputers, you might be wondering how these giant machines are being used. A supercomputer can contain hundreds of thousands of processor cores and require an entire building to house and cool—not to mention millions of dollars to create and maintain them. But despite these challenges, more and more are set to go online as the US and China develop new "exascale" supercomputers, which promise a five-fold performance boost compared to current leading systems. So who needs all this computing power and why? To find out, PCMag visited the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, which is home to several supercomputers, including the world's second fastest, Sierra. It was there we learned how system engineers are maintaining the machines to serve scientific researchers but also test something you might not expect: nuclear weapons. A … [Read more...] about Why Do We Need Supercomputers and Who Is Using Them?
“I don’t want more success. I don’t want more money.” When most hedge fund managers say something like that to you, you’d be justified in suspecting that they’re giving you their carefully crafted Davos riff. Because unlike many Silicon Valley billionaires who believe (or sort of believe) in the transcendence of their mission, the motives of the Wall Street titan are often straightforward: it’s about the money, and when the money gets huge, it’s about building a legacy. But as Ray Dalio looked me in the eyes recently and said those words, I believed in his sincerity. That’s not to say he won’t earn enormous sums more. In fact, last year, the financial press widely reported that Dalio earned in the ten figures thanks to Bridgewater’s flagship Pure Alpha fund posting stellar returns. But when you spend some time with Dalio and broach the various topics in which he has rarefied expertise, it’s apparent that today, … [Read more...] about Citizen Ray: Bridgewater’s Ray Dalio is the wise uncle you wished you had
Big BangsHistory has seen some monstrous eruptions of volcanoes, from Mount Pinatubo's weather-cooling burp to the explosion of Mt. Tambora, one of the tallest peaks in the Indonesian archipelago. The power of such eruptions is measured using the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) a classification system developed in the 1980 that's somewhat akin to the magnitude scale for earthquakes. The scale goes from 1 to 8, and each succeeding VEI is 10 times greater than the last. There haven't been any VEI-8 volcanoes in the last 10,000 years, but human history has seen some powerful and devastating eruptions. Because it's extremely difficult for scientists to be able to rank the strength of eruptions in the same VEI category, here we present the 10 most powerful volcanoes within the last 4,000 years (within human records) first in order of strength, then within each category, in chronological order. But let's start with a supervolcano eruption surprisingly close to home, registering a magnitude-8, … [Read more...] about The 11 Biggest Volcanic Eruptions in History
