XYZPrinting has a new 3D printer called the da Vinci Color mini available on Indiegogo for $999. We have seen several 3D printers from XYZPrinting in the past, but this one is something altogether new. Where most 3D printers require multiple colored filaments or by-hand painting to create 3D objects in different colors, the da Vinci Color Mini will actually use three ink cartridges, similar to what you'd find in a regular printer, to stain the filament as it prints. Originally developed last year, the da Vinci Color was called the "world's first full color 3D printer" by XYZPrinting. The mini version is designed for consumers like you and me. It's compact enough to fit in a small office or right on your desktop, and it can build objects up to 5.1 x 5.1 x 5.1 inches in size. It can work in a classroom, a business, or anywhere else you want to use it. Print gifts, create sculptures, or learn something new altogether. The best part is the price. When the da Vinci Color mini fully … [Read more...] about Pre-order the new da Vinci color mini 3D printer and save up to $600

It's a small piece — merely a square tile depicting a curly-haired Archangel Gabriel — but it may be the oldest surviving artwork by the Renaissance master Leonardo Da Vinci. If verified, this painted and glazed tile may show historians what Da Vinci looked like as a teenager. That's because the 1471 creation may, in fact, be a self-portrait Da Vinci made — essentially putting his face on the angel's when he was just 18 years old. However, many doubt the artwork's authenticity. Martin Kemp, an emeritus professor of art history at Oxford University who is a Leonardo expert, dismissed the claim outright, as reported by The Guardian. [Leonardo Da Vinci's 10 Best Ideas] "The chance of its being by Leonardo is less than zero," Kemp told The Guardian. "The silly season for Leonardo never closes." The nearly 8-inch by 8-inch (20 by 20 centimeters) square tile may contain clues linking it to Da Vinci, according to Ernesto Solari, an art historian and Da Vinci expert, and … [Read more...] about Is This Leonardo Da Vinci’s Oldest Surviving Work? In the show Westworld, Anthony Hopkins plays the master architect Robert Ford. He designed the sentient robots that populate Delos Inc.'s sumptuous parks. He has an artist's discerning eye, the life-breathing gift of an inventor, and the calculating menace of a sociopath. And he has continued to loom over Westworld's happenings, despite having been killed by Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) at the end of Season 1. In the seventh episode of the show’s second season, he returns to center stage. The preceding episode revealed that Ford had maintained his spectral presence by uploading himself to The Cradle: a simulation of Westworld that serves as a backup copy of the minds of its many hosts. From there Westworld's hidden puppet master seemed to be controlling aspects of the physical world and, at times, the actions of the hosts. Did the rebelling hosts have free will? Westworld never made that clear; then again, self-determination is an elusive goal for all of us. In this current … [Read more...] about Recap, Season 2 Episode 7: Decoding Da Vinci
XYZprinting has led the way in low-cost 3D printers by offering a variety of models that undercut higher-priced machines with similar capabilities. There are machines that print using using liquid resin (stereolithography) and professional-grade machines for rapid prototyping.Typically, XYZprinting's machines fall short on producing high quality builds, but the resolution and accuracy of their models are more than proportionate to the cost of the printers. The company's latest 3D printer, the da Vinci Jr. 2.0 Mix, allows makers to print with two different colored filaments at the same time -- once again demonstrating XYZprinting's ability to offer special capabilities with a desktop printer at cut-rate pricing. At $450 (Amazon price), the da Vinci Jr. 2.0 Mix carries a hefty price premium over its predecessor -- the da Vinci Jr. 1.0, which retails for $200 (Amazon price). In the overall scheme of things, however, XYZprinting's machines are far less expensive than most 3D printers of … [Read more...] about Review: da Vinci Jr. 2.0 Mix 3D printer produces good quality, multi-colored objects
It's difficult to find a solid 3D printer that doesn't cost an arm and a leg; however, XYZprinting seems to have accomplished this with the latest iteration of its low-end printer, the da Vinci Jr. 2.0 Mix. The interesting thing about this printer isn't only the relative quality of its printing, but the fact that it can use two different colored filaments simultaneously to create interesting color mixes -- thus, the name. Outstanding features: The da Vinci Jr. 2.0 Mix uses a new dual-feed system to send two filaments to a single extruder module to create a print that either gradually changes color, creates separate layers of two colors or mixes two colors to create a third one. It is also very simple to set up and use, with an automatic calibration system that, says Mearian, allows you to get going immediately without any manual calibration. However, because the printer bed is not heated, there were adhesion difficulties, even following the manufacturer's suggestions on how to deal … [Read more...] about Desktop 3D printers: The latest and the greatest
