On June 17, the country's internet watchdog, Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), published a draft update (opens in new tab) to its 2017 legislation regulating the country's censorship machine. Platforms' content moderation teams will be required to filter and report any illegal content to authorities. All types of comment will be targeted, from original posts and replies to real-time time comments on video streaming – so-called 'bullet chats.' What's more, for the first time the creator of a post will be considered responsible for other people commenting on it too. The new directives have sparked concerns over yet more censorship in a country where the world's most stringent rules are already in place. tencent: China to import 45 foreign video games, grants multiple licences to Tencent
China's video games regulator granted publishing licences to 45 foreign games for release in the country further lifting rigid curbs that have hammered the industry for 18 months. Among the imported online games approved by the National Press and Publication Administration are five to be published by Tencent Holdings such as "Pokemon Unite" by Nintendo and "Valorant" by Riot Games , according to a list the regulator released. The regulator also approved 84 domestic games for the month of December, according to a separate list released. The approval of imported games effectively marks the end of Beijing's crackdown on the video games industry which began last August when regulators suspended the game approval process. Exclusive — Pompeo on War with China: ‘Our Military Should Get Ready’
Mike Pompeo, secretary of state and CIA director during the Trump administration, told Sirius XM’s Breitbart News Saturday in an exclusive interview on Saturday he supported the point a U.S. military general made in a recent memo that the U.S. needs to be prepared for war with China. NBC News reported Friday that Gen. Mike Minihan, commander of Air Mobility Command (AMC), wrote a memo that predicted that the U.S. would be at war with China over Taiwan in 2025. Minihan wrote that the U.S. and Taiwan would be “distracted” by presidential elections in both countries in 2024, and Chinese President Xi Jinping would have an opportunity to move on Taiwan. “I hope I am wrong. My gut tells me will fight in 2025,” said Minihan. Minihan also reportedly told all air wing commanders in AMC and other Air Force operational commanders to report all major efforts to prepare for a fight with China by February 28. AMC is responsible for transport and refueling of service members around the … [Read more...] about Exclusive — Pompeo on War with China: ‘Our Military Should Get Ready’
Netherlands and Japan agree to restrict export of chipmaking tools to China
What just happened? The Netherlands and Japan have reached an agreement with the US to impose restrictions on the export of chip manufacturing tools to China. The move marks the end of two years of negotiations as the Biden administration tried to convince the countries to introduce US-style export controls on chipmaking equipment. Reports last month suggested that the Netherlands and Japan were close to implementing bans on the export of advanced chipmaking devices to China following talks with Washington. While the sensitive nature of the deal means it hasn't been publicly announced, several people familiar with the matter say an agreement was reached on Friday. Part of the reason the talks took so long to conclude was fear over how a ban would impact the nations' chip giants: ASML in the Netherlands and Tokyo Electron and Nikon in Japan. ASML, the world's largest supplier of lithography machines used in the chipmaking process, was already prohibited from selling its … [Read more...] about Netherlands and Japan agree to restrict export of chipmaking tools to China
huawei: US stops granting export licenses for China’s Huawei, claim sources
The Biden administration has stopped approving licenses for US companies to export most items to China's Huawei , according to three people familiar with the matter. Huawei has faced US export restrictions around items for 5G and other technologies for several years, but officials in the US Department of Commerce have granted licenses for some American firms to sell certain goods and technologies to the company. Qualcomm Inc in 2020 received permission to sell 4G smartphone chips to Huawei. A Commerce Department spokesperson said officials "continually assess our policies and regulations" but do not comment on talks with specific companies. Huawei and Qualcomm declined to comment. Bloomberg and the Financial Times earlier reported the move. One person familiar with the matter said US officials are creating a new formal policy of denial for shipping items to Huawei that would include items below the 5G level, including 4G items, Wifi 6 and 7, … [Read more...] about huawei: US stops granting export licenses for China’s Huawei, claim sources
WHO presses China for more data after COVID death tally leaps from 37 to 60K
China is now reporting that nearly 60,000 people had died of COVID-19 since early December when the country abruptly abandoned its zero-COVID policy and omicron subvariants began ripping through its population. The new death toll is a stark revision from China's previously reported figure for that period, which was just 37. But experts remain skeptical that the new, much larger tally is a complete accounting, and the World Health Organization continues to press the country to release more data. In a Saturday press conference in Beijing, the Medical Administration Director of China's National Health Commission (NHC), Jiao Yahui, told reporters that the country recorded 59,938 COVID-related deaths between December 8 and January 12. Of those, 5,503 deaths were specifically linked to respiratory failure, and 54,435 were associated with underlying conditions, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. The new figures double the country's tally of COVID-19 deaths due specifically to … [Read more...] about WHO presses China for more data after COVID death tally leaps from 37 to 60K
tesla: China’s BYD takes cautious approach to US in global EV push
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD is embarking on a rapid global expansion to challenge Tesla but for now it's stuck in the slow lane on its rival's home turf. While BYD has not fully articulated its global ambitions in public, a concerted worldwide push has become the single most important strategic focus for China's biggest EV maker, four sources familiar with BYD management's thinking said. Besides a drive into some European markets already underway, BYD spent much of last year conducting a study on how to set up a US distribution network for its latest electric models, two of the sources said. They described the study as advanced and serious, with specific recommendations from Detroit-based consultancy Urban Science on how many outlets in each state and city BYD would need, as well as formats for the brick-and-mortar stores. Xi Jinping Sells Belt and Road Debt Traps to Leftist Latin America Summit
Chinese dictator Xi Jinping addressed this week’s Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit on Tuesday, urging the Western Hemisphere to embrace the Belt and Road Chinese debt trap program and emphasizing that China sees the region as a “key partner in enhancing solidarity.” CELAC is a left-leaning platform that rivals the Organization of American States (OAS). It is currently holding a head-of-state conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, hosted by socialist President Alberto Fernandez. Argentina is a Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner, alongside several other members of the coalition. The CELAC conference has served this week primarily as a platform for the regional left to welcome back to power Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the corrupt former president of Brazil who was inaugurated into a third term as head of state on January 1. His predecessor, conservative former President Jair Bolsonaro, withdrew Brazil from the coalition in 2020. Lula – once … [Read more...] about Xi Jinping Sells Belt and Road Debt Traps to Leftist Latin America Summit
Chinese nuclear-weapons institute uses Intel, Nvidia hardware despite US tech ban
In brief: While the US has further tightened restrictions on chip-related exports to China recently, there are some entities in the country that have been on an export blacklist for decades. One of these is China's top nuclear-weapons research institute, but that hasn't stopped it from regularly buying Intel and Nvidia hardware. The state-run China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) was one of the first to be placed on a US export blacklist in 1997 because of its work in the field of nuclear weapons, preventing it from purchasing American technology. However, according to a Wall Street Journal report , the institute has obtained US hardware at least a dozen times since 2020, including Intel's Xeon Gold processors and Nvidia's GeForce RTX graphics cards, for use in academy computers. Intel and Nvidia cannot sell their products directly to the CAEP; instead, the institute bought them from Chinese marketplaces such as Taobao, Aliexpress, and other resellers. A WSJ review of … [Read more...] about Chinese nuclear-weapons institute uses Intel, Nvidia hardware despite US tech ban
No more export licenses: US plans to fully cut off Huawei from chip suppliers
Huawei has been hobbling along for a few years now with limited access to US chips and technology, with both the Trump and Biden administrations banning general exports to the company. Huawei hasn't seen zero US chips, but every sale has had to be approved by the government, with the restrictions being tweaked several times since the initial ban in 2019. Reuters , The Financial Times , and several other outlets have reported that the Biden administration is putting even tighter restrictions on Huawei, with FT saying the US is working toward a "total ban" on sales to the Chinese tech company. Like every tech company, Huawei buys components from a bunch of different suppliers to make its network equipment and smartphones. While a ton of manufacturing is done in China, there aren't many options for CPUs, and US companies Qualcomm and Intel have been keeping Huawei afloat with limited government-granted export licenses. Intel chips have meant the company can still build servers, and … [Read more...] about No more export licenses: US plans to fully cut off Huawei from chip suppliers
