Switzerland's Reporting and Analysis Centre for Information Assurance (MELANI), confirmed that seven companies were known to have been affected in the attacks and said it was analyzing the malware. For security reasons, it did not name the affected companies, but multimedia publisher Admeira said on Tuesday that it had been affected by the attacks. Its website was still down on Wednesday. "We are working urgently to analyze the situation and take action," Admeira said on Tuesday afternoon. The global cyber attack started spreading on Tuesday in Ukraine, which was the most severely hit country with the metro network, government departments and the central bank all affected. Hackers on Tuesday ratcheted up their attacks on some of the world’s critical institutions, using ransomware to hijack computers used by banks, railways, utilities, oil companies and pharmaceutical firms from Europe to the United States. The cyber offensive followed the May 12 release of WannaCry, a type of ransomware that hackers spread to 150 countries. That attack was seen as a possible trial run for something bigger.Tuesday’s assault involved Petya, a nastier, self-replicating form of ransomware cloaked inside emails that can appear to be normal if they’re not examined closely.Petya “not only holds your computer hostage until you pay, it tries to spread to other vulnerable systems and therefore increases the number of systems infected,” said Ben Johnson of Obsidian Security in Newport Beach.Analysts weren’t sure Tuesday how many computers have been hit by Petya. They also don’t know who launched the attack and whether the hackers are primary … [Read more...] about Major cyber attack spreads across Europe to the U.S.
What is a cyber attack?Simply put, a cyber attack is an attack launched from one computer or more computers against another computer, multiple computers or networks.Cyber attacks might be broken down into two broad types: attacks where the goal is to disable the target computer or knock it offline, or attacks where the goal is to get access to the target computer's data and perhaps gain admin privileges on it. There are a variety of techniques attackers use to achieve those goals, including: Malware (malicious software) downloaded to a target computer that can do anything from steal data to encrypt files and demand ransom Phishing emails that are crafted to fool victims into giving up passwords or taking some other harmful action Denial of Service attacks, which overwhelm a web server with bogus traffic Man in the middle attacks, which fool the target computer into joining a compromised network And, of course, these techniques can be used in tandem. For instance, phishing emails may … [Read more...] about What is a cyber attack? Recent examples show disturbing trends

After working its way onto important infrastructure components and encrypting the files of thousands, NotPetya is now considered an intentional cyber attack performed by Russia. According to White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, the Russian military "attack launched in June 2017" and has caused "billions of dollars in damage across Europe, Asia and the Americas." The United States has called the wide sweeping spread of malware indiscriminate and reckless, with promises of consequences incoming. The official White House statement notes that the end goal of NotPetya was destabilizing Ukraine and infrastructure in other nations. Although NotPetya may appear to masquerade as a relatively sophisticated ransomware, its true purpose was likely never to turn a profit for its creators. No matter what organization is responsible for a cyber attack, there are some important factors to consider when analyzing how malware spreads. NotPetya relies on the use of a vulnerability in Server Message … [Read more...] about White House calls NotPetya intentional cyber attack by the Kremlin
