(Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O) on Wednesday warned that hackers have infected at least 500,000 routers and storage devices in dozens of countries with highly sophisticated malicious software, possibly in preparation for another massive cyber attack on Ukraine. REUTERS/Valentyn Ogirenko Cisco’s Talos cyber intelligence unit said it has high confidence that the Russian government is behind the campaign, dubbed VPNFilter, because the hacking software shares code with malware used in previous cyber attacks that the U.S. government has attributed to Moscow. Cisco said the malware could be used for espionage, to interfere with internet communications or launch destructive attacks on Ukraine, which has previously blamed Russia for massive hacks that took out parts of its energy grid and shuttered factories. “With a network like this you could do … [Read more...] about Cyber firms warn on suspected Russian plan to attack Ukraine
BERLIN (Reuters) - The German government has to assume that a cyber attack on its Foreign Ministry stemmed from Russia, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told the broadcaster ZDF on Sunday. REUTERS/Yves Herman Maas listed a series of what he called problematic actions by Moscow, including the lack of progress in implementing a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, a poison gas attack in Britain, Moscow’s support of the Syrian government, Russia’s efforts to influence Western elections, and the cyber attack. “We had an attack on the Foreign Ministry where we have to assume that it stemmed from Russia,” he said. “We can’t just wish all that away ... And I think it’s not only reasonable but necessary to point out that we do not view those as constructive contributions.” Reporting by Andrea Shalal; Editing by Kevin Liffey … [Read more...] about Germany says it has to assume Russia behind recent cyber attack

For security reasons, it did not name the affected companies, but multimedia publisher Admeira said on Tuesday that it had been affected by the attacks. Its website was still down on Wednesday. "We are working urgently to analyze the situation and take action," Admeira said on Tuesday afternoon. The global cyber attack started spreading on Tuesday in Ukraine, which was the most severely hit country with the metro network, government departments and the central bank all affected. Worldwide, the ransomware has affected companies including Russian oil company Rosneft, a major Dutch … [Read more...] about Seven Swiss companies affected by global cyber attacks
Hackers on Tuesday ratcheted up their attacks on some of the world’s critical institutions, using ransomware to hijack computers used by banks, railways, utilities, oil companies and pharmaceutical firms from Europe to the United States. The cyber offensive followed the May 12 release of WannaCry, a type of ransomware that hackers spread to 150 countries. That attack was seen as a possible trial run for something bigger.Tuesday’s assault involved Petya, a nastier, self-replicating form of ransomware cloaked inside emails that can appear to be normal if they’re not examined closely.Petya “not only holds your computer hostage until you pay, it tries to spread to other vulnerable systems and therefore increases the number of systems infected,” said Ben Johnson of Obsidian Security in Newport Beach.Analysts weren’t sure Tuesday how many computers have been hit by Petya. They also don’t know who launched the attack and whether the hackers are primary … [Read more...] about Major cyber attack spreads across Europe to the U.S.
