opinion Henry Payne The Detroit News Published 10:07 PM EDT Jun 12, 2019 Socialism is all the rage these days among Washington elites, but lucky for them their new BMW 3-series was born in the boiling shark tank of capitalism. Long the alpha shark in the compact-luxury segment, the last-generation 3 got a little, um, fat. And boy, did the product managers in Munich get an earful from the market. New Coke never had it this hard. Media outlets ripped BMW for going soft. Car and Driver dropped the 3-series from its Top 10 list for the first time in memory. Sales dropped. Enthusiasts started to talk openly of the Alfa Giulia and Cadillac ATS as the new standards for class-handling. The competitive pressures weren’t just athletic complaints, either. Mercedes’ luscious interiors were turning heads away from BMW. Tesla’s sci-fi Model 3 was shaming the class with Silicon Valley technology. Mainstream upstarts like the Mazda 6 were offering athletic … [Read more...] about Payne: BMW 3-series wants its crown back

I’m not proud of myself, but for one of the first times in my long career as a critic, I could not bring myself to go into the burger joint (not Superica) I’d picked out to review. I sat in front of the place, drinking in the … [Read more...] about Burger Friday: Superica in the Heights

Carlsen in action against Curuana on Wednesday. Photo: Tolga Akmen / AFP Three-time chess champion Magnus Carlsen on Wednesday successfully defended his world title after demolishing US hopeful Fabiano Caruana in a winner-takes-all finale. The 27-year-old Norwegian won three successive rapid-chess tiebreakers in a display of intuition and guile that overwhelmed the 26-year-old American in London. The fearless performance will go a long way to cementing his claim to be history's greatest player -- a title some still award to Soviet-Russian legend Garry Kasparov. Kasparov himself appeared in awe of Carlsen's display in a format that has seen many grandmasters before him wilt under the mental strain. "Carlsen's consistent level of play in rapid chess is phenomenal," Kasparov tweeted. "We all play worse as we play faster and faster, but his ratio may be the smallest ever, perhaps only a 15 percent drop off. Huge advantage in this format." … [Read more...] about Norway’s Carlsen beats US rival to keep chess crown
Market momentum for smart speakers shows no sign of slowing — quite the opposite, in fact. A new report published by research firm Canalys shows that worldwide smart speaker shipments grew 137 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of 2018 to reach 19.7 million units, up from 8.3 million in Q3 2017. Amazon won the quarter by sales — it managed to get 6.3 million Echo smart speakers onto eager customers’ doorsteps by Q3’s end. But Google rode close on its coattails with 5.9 million Google Home devices shipped. The quarter marked something of a turnaround for Amazon, which ceded ground to Google in Q2 2018. Strategy Analytics reported in September that the Google Home Mini was the best-selling voice-enabled speaker in the second quarter of 2018, followed by Amazon’s Echo Dot. And in August, Canalys predicted that if Amazon were to remain on its current trajectory, it would see its market share slip to 34 percent by 2022. Third-quarter 2018 … [Read more...] about Canalys: Amazon retook smart speaker crown from Google in Q3 2018
