Further Reading Intel’s loss is AMD’s gain as EPYC server CPUs benefit from Intel’s delays Nvidia doesn't officially announce its second-quarter financial results until the end of the month, but the company is trying to soften the blow by announcing preliminary results today . And as with so many other tech companies in the last month, the results are mixed at best. With $6.7 billion in revenue, Nvidia managed to eke out year-over-year growth, but the results are still bad news because that number is down from a previously forecasted $8.1 billion, a miss of $1.4 billion. Nvidia blamed this shortfall on weaker-than-expected demand for its gaming products, including its GeForce graphics processors. Nvidia pointed to "a reduction in channel partner sales," meaning that partners like Evga, MSI, Asus, Zotac, Gigabyte, and others were selling fewer new GPUs than anticipated. This drop can be attributed partly to a crash in the value of mining-based cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin … [Read more...] about Crypto-driven GPU crash makes Nvidia miss Q2 projections by $1.4 billion

Tesla faces new probes into motorbike deaths, false advertising
Tesla went into the weekend with a fresh pair of headaches. On Friday, the Associated Press reported that the federal government is investigating whether or not the company's Autopilot system can safely recognize motorcyclists after a pair of fatal crashes in July. And the Los Angeles Times reported that California is unhappy with the way the automaker has advertised its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving driver assist technologies. While still a student at the University of California-Berkley and an intern at Ampex, he and his wife designed the two-player mode for Computer Space , the first coin-operated game, alongside the likes of Nolan Bushnell, Al Alcorn, and Ted Dabney. Shortly after Bushnell left Computer Space maker Nutting Associates to start Atari, Bristow followed, developing early multi-paddle versions of Pong ( Pong Doubles and Quadrapong ) as well as Indy 800 , one of the first arcade racing games. Bristow was also tasked with some of the grunt work in those early days of arcade gaming. "I worked part-time doing maintenance on the Pong machines and collecting the money," he recalled in a Wired interview . "In Berkeley, a weapons permit is hard to get, but they won't stop you from carrying a hatchet, so people out at 2am would see my wife … [Read more...] about Obituary: Gaming pioneer Steve Bristow helped design
