MEPs Vow to Fight ‘Immoral’ and ‘Dangerous’ EU COVID Pass Extension

June 23, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

MEPs from across the EU have told Breitbart Europe that they will continue to challenge the EU’s COVID pass regime as it comes up for renewal on Thursday. Members of the European Union’s Parliament (MEPs) have told Breitbart Europe that they will continue to fight against the bloc’s regime of COVID passes as their renewal is voted upon by the European Parliament on Thursday. Having been set to expire at the end of this month, the bloc’s Civil Liberties committee voted last week to see the measures extended for another year, justifying the decision by saying that it was important to have the COVID pass system in place “in case it is needed”. However, several representatives elected to the European Parliament from across the EU have told Breitbart Europe that they vehemently oppose such a renewal, with a number of MEPs saying that the measures represent an unjustifiable intrusion on the rights of ordinary people. ‘Are You Serious?’ Eurocrat Claims Bloc Never Pushed People … [Read more...] about MEPs Vow to Fight ‘Immoral’ and ‘Dangerous’ EU COVID Pass Extension

Wearable activity trackers that monitor changes in skin temperature and heart and breathing rates, combined with artificial intelligence ( AI ), might be used to pick up Covid-19 infection days before symptoms start, claimed preliminary research. Typical Covid-19 symptoms may take several days after infection before they appear, during which time an infected person can unwittingly spread the virus. But in the study, published in the open access journal BMJ Open, the researchers found that overall the health tracker , in combination with an computer algorithm, correctly identified 68 per cent of Covid positive people two days before their symptoms appeared. The international team including from University of Basel (Switzerland) and Imperial College London, pointed out that while a PCR swab test remains the gold standard for confirming Covid-19 infection, "our findings suggest that a wearable-informed machine learning algorithm may serve as a promising tool for … [Read more...] about covid 19: Wearable AI trackers may detect Covid-19 days before symptoms appear, claim researchers

covid: Researchers develop ‘Covid computer: What it is and what it means for you

July 4, 2022 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

UK researchers have created a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can detect COVID-19. The software analyses chest CT scans and uses deep learning algorithms to accurately diagnose the disease. The team from the University of Leicester said that with an accuracy rate of 97.86 percent, it's currently the most successful Covid-19 diagnostic tool in the world. Currently, the diagnosis of COVID is based on nucleic acid testing, or PCR tests, as they are commonly known. These tests can produce false negatives, and results can also be affected by hysteresis, which is when the physical effects of an illness lag behind its cause. AI, therefore, offers an opportunity to rapidly screen and effectively monitor COVID cases on a large scale, reducing the burden on doctors. "Research focuses on the automatic diagnosis of COVID-19 based on random graph neural networks. The results showed that our method can find the suspicious regions in the chest images automatically … [Read more...] about covid: Researchers develop ‘Covid computer: What it is and what it means for you

Pfizer says 3-dose COVID vaccine for under 5s produces strong immune response

May 23, 2022 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

Pfizer and BioNTech will request authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration this week for their three-dose COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to under 5 years, the companies announced this morning . Top-line clinical trial results indicate that the vaccine series is safe and produces a strong immune response against the pandemic virus, according to the companies. "The study suggests that a low 3-[microgram] dose of our vaccine…  provides young children with a high level of protection against the recent COVID-19 strains," BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin said in a statement. The trial involved 1,678 children who were given two doses of the vaccine 21 days apart and then a third dose at least two months after the second dose. A month after the third dose, researchers looked at SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels in the children and found that both the 6- to 24-month-old infants and the 2- to under 5-year-old children produced similar antibody levels as seen in teens and … [Read more...] about Pfizer says 3-dose COVID vaccine for under 5s produces strong immune response

Tata Consultancy Services ( TCS ) reportedly seems set to roll out chip-based e-passports by the end of the year. According to a report in Economic Times (ET), TCS is also setting up a new command and control centre with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as well as new data centre to support the backend requirements of the project. Earlier this year, the ministry renewed its 10-year PSK deal worth over Rs 6,000 crore with TCS. This is part of the second phase of the passport project that the company bagged from the government. This passport project is said to be the country's largest mission-critical e-governance programme till date. Here's a ready reckoner on e-passports and the recent updates on the rollout. What is an e-passport At first glance, an e-passport looks just like a regular passport. However, an e-passport comes fitted with a small electronic chip, something similar to as seen on a driver’s licence. Where’s the next generation of COVID-19 shots?

June 23, 2022 by www.theverge.com Leave a Comment

Over a year after the US authorized its first vaccines, COVID cases continue to pile up, leaving many vaccinated people wondering: “Do I need a vaccine upgrade?” People who are fully vaccinated and boosted have been testing positive in huge numbers, particularly since the omicron-triggered wave started its relentless burn across the United States in December. Vaccines that once caused experts to declare COVID-19 a “pandemic of the unvaccinated” don’t protect as well against illness, even as they continued to protect against the most severe disease. Breakthrough infections are so common that the near-miraculous protection the vaccine promised a year ago feels very far away. Part of the problem is that the virus that the vaccines target — the first version of the coronavirus that started spreading in early 2020 — doesn’t exist anymore. Now, regulators, researchers, and vaccine companies are turning to the next phase of the vaccine development process: finding a way to protect against … [Read more...] about Where’s the next generation of COVID-19 shots?

Fauci reports COVID rebound, says it’s “much worse” than initial illness

June 29, 2022 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

The country's top infectious disease expert, Anthony Fauci, has been struck by a phenomenon that appears to be becoming more common in the latest stage of the pandemic—rebounding bouts of COVID-19 after a course of the antiviral drug Paxlovid. Further Reading COVID rebounds: Immune responses may be reignited by cleanup of viral scraps In an interview Tuesday at Foreign Policy's Global Health Forum, Fauci recounted the progression of his infection to his current rebound, which he said has been much worse than his first round with the disease. Fauci—the director of the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and chief medical advisor to the president—is 81 years old and has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and boosted twice. He first tested positive on a rapid antigen test on June 15 and experienced "very minimal symptoms." But his symptoms worsened and he began a five-day course of Paxlovid. "And I felt really … [Read more...] about Fauci reports COVID rebound, says it’s “much worse” than initial illness

COVID-19 booster shots should target omicron variants, FDA says

June 30, 2022 by www.theverge.com Leave a Comment

COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers should include the newer forms of the omicron coronavirus variant in booster shots this fall, the Food and Drug Administration recommended today . The agency said it wants vaccine manufacturers to create booster shots that include two forms of the virus — the original strain, which is what’s in current vaccines, and the BA.4 and BA.5 lineages of the omicron variant. Those lineages have taken over as the most common form of the virus circulating in the United States. They’re highly contagious and are even better at evading the immune system than some previous versions of the virus. Vaccine manufacturers Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax have already been testing omicron-targeted versions of their vaccines, which early data showing that they can help trigger a stronger immune response to the omicron variant than existing shots. The versions they’ve been testing, though, include an earlier form of the omicron variant — the BA.1 lineage. Companies … [Read more...] about COVID-19 booster shots should target omicron variants, FDA says
