For months, Republican Senate candidate Bob Hugin has assailed Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez in TV ads, calling the two-term incumbent corrupt because of now-dismissed federal corruption charges, whittling down the incumbent's double-digit lead in the polls to single digits. Now, with less than three months until voters go to the polls in Democratic-leaning New Jersey, where the Senate race is at the top of the ticket, Menendez is unleashing his own TV advertising fusillade, with two new 30-second spots this week criticizing the wealthy former pharmaceutical executive as greedy. Both men, 64, grew up in Union City, the roughly square-mile city in Hudson County, just a short ride from New York across the Hudson River. It's an old neighborhood brawl, but with national political implications. "It's frankly notable that I even have to pay attention to it," said Jennifer Duffy, a senior editor at the Cook Political Report. New Jersey Congressman Calls for Upgraded Seat Belts on School Buses After Deadly Crash
The New Jersey bus crash that killed a teacher and a 10-year-old twin student from is sparking a movement to upgrade seat belts. The Route 80 accident two weeks ago killed teacher Jennifer Williamson-Kennedy and student Miranda Vargas; the 77-year-old driver, Hudy Muldrow Sr., was charged with two counts of death by auto and made his first appearance in a Morristown court Friday. But the safety of students is still an open question; they were all wearing seat belts, yet two passengers were killed. Now New Jersey congressman Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) says he has lined up bipartisan support for a bill that could force the government to install three-point shoulder belts on school buses everywhere, like the ones required in passenger cars and trucks. "Properly worn lap and shoulder belts provide the highest level of protections for school bus passengers in all crash scenarios," Gottheimer said, quoting from the NTSB last week. New Jersey is one of six states that require … [Read more...] about New Jersey Congressman Calls for Upgraded Seat Belts on School Buses After Deadly Crash
