LONDON: Vodafone 's new chief executive said he would cut costs and seek to maximise the value of its masts and towers to drive higher returns at the world's second largest mobile operator after taking charge last month. Replacing Vittorio Colao at the top of the British company after the Italian ran the group for 10 years, former finance director Nick Read also said he would freeze the dividend until its large debt pile fell. "My new strategic priorities focus on ... radically simplifying our operating model and generating better returns from our infrastructure assets," Read said on Tuesday. The market reaction was positive, with Vodafone's battered shares trading 9 percent higher at 1055 GMT. Read outlined his strategy as Vodafone reported a slowdown in second-quarter organic revenue growth to 0.5 percent from 1.1 percent in the previous three months, laying bare the struggle it faces to turn ever increasing demands for data into a stronger top line. Lyft says cost cuts, coming ride recovery could bring third-quarter profit
Lyft Inc said it could make an adjusted profit by the third quarter of this year despite the pandemic thanks to additional cost cuts and an expected rebound in ride-hail demand beginning in the second quarter of 2021. Shares surged 10.7% to $59.40 in after-hours trading following the announcement. Lyft expects COVID-19 vaccine distribution to scale up in the second quarter, allowing more people to return to pre-pandemic normality, and said its own cost cuts were ahead of target. That will help it achieve a profit on an adjusted basis of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. "Based on the improvements we've made, there is a chance we can achieve profitability in Q3. Obviously, pulling in profitability would require a strong summer rebound," Lyft Chief Financial Officer Brian Roberts said during an investor call, adding the more optimistic outlook should increase investor confidence. Ride volumes were down 52% in December and 51% in January compared … [Read more...] about Lyft says cost cuts, coming ride recovery could bring third-quarter profit

This is how much it costs Uber to use Google Maps
While Google Maps is a free-to-use mapping service for end users, for businesses it is not. Companies have to sign a licensing agreement with Alphabet Inc. to use Google Maps to provide services and this costs money. US-based ridesharing company Uber has revealed that it had paid $58 million to Alphabet for using Google Maps between January 2016 and December 2018. This information was officially shared by Uber in its S-1 securities form that was filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission ahead of its public IPO. “In October 2015, we entered into a Google Maps for Work Master Agreement with Google Inc. that was amended in August 2017 and supplemented with two order forms with Google LLC, each of which is an affiliate of Alphabet Inc., a beneficial holder of more than 5% of our outstanding capital stock, pursuant to which Google agreed to provide us with mapping and related services that are integrated into our platform,” said Uber in its filing. Uber stressed … [Read more...] about This is how much it costs Uber to use Google Maps
UPDATED: Panel backs ITER fusion project’s new schedule, but balks at cost
At one of the most critical time in its history, leaders of the ITER fusion project are struggling to find a way to keep the project on track as schedules slip, costs rise, and budgets tighten. The project’s management last year put forward a revised schedule and cost , and the council of representatives from its member states asked a panel of independent experts to review them. Yesterday, the council met in special session to hear a report of the panel’s conclusions. The report—which has been seen by Science —concludes that, while the new schedule is feasible (powering up the reactor in 2025 for the first time), the extra funding needed to achieve it (€4.6 billion) is too much to hope for. The council has now tasked the ITER management with finding a way to keep to the schedule while remaining within the financial constraints and differing budget cycles of the seven partners in the project--China, the European Union, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and the United States. … [Read more...] about UPDATED: Panel backs ITER fusion project’s new schedule, but balks at cost
