A group representing major internet companies including Facebook Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reject a Trump administration bid to narrow the ability of social media companies to remove objectionable content. The Internet Association said in a filing that the Trump administration petition filed in August seeking new rules "is misguided, lacks grounding in law, and poses serious public policy concerns." It said new FCC rules could result in a loss of legal protections for removing "fraudulent schemes, scams, dangerous content promoting suicide or eating disorders to teens, and a wide range of other types of 'otherwise objectionable' content." The Consumer Technology Association, which represents companies like IBM, Microsoft and Sony , also blasted the effort, saying it would "make compliance all but impossible." "It is shocking that our own government would seek to undermine a law that has led to unprecedented … [Read more...] about Internet companies urge FCC to reject Donald Trump bid to impose new social media regulations

A turn to administrative records Trump’s 2019 executive order to the secretary of commerce, who oversees the Census Bureau, was widely seen as an attempt to get around the Supreme Court’s ruling by obtaining citizenship data through government records. The new memo goes a step further. In essence, it orders Census officials to subdivide the category of noncitizens into two pots: those who are in the country legally and those without proper documentation. The commerce secretary would then give the president a revised tally of each state’s population that excludes undocumented residents for purposes of apportionment. … [Read more...] about Can the Census Bureau actually meet Trump’s demand to identify noncitizens?
Reddit’s official, high-profile AMAs — like the 2012 one with Barack Obama — are usually held on the subreddit r/IAmA. Trump’s, however, was in r/The_Donald, a dedicated Trump forum. While the subreddit’s rules ban racism and anti-semitism, members (and moderators) of r/The_Donald have a history of it; every public forum will have bad posts, but this is a case where there’s been an outright flamewar over how much influence far-right extremists should have. Tonight, the subreddit’s members reminded each other to be on their best behavior. "We can’t give the dishonest media any type of ammunition to use against Trump," wrote one commenter. The thread was heavily moderated, and questions from new or rarely active accounts were automatically filtered out, although "public figures who support Trump" could be exempted. A moderator wrote afterward that they’d banned 2,200 accounts during the AMA. … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s Reddit Q&A session was surprisingly bland
As Trump ordered, the NTIA asks the FCC to issue a new interpretation of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act that would limit social media platforms' legal protections for hosting third-party content when the platforms take down content they consider objectionable. The NTIA petition says that Twitter "suppressed the speech of an American politician for 'glorifying violence' while permitting that of a foreign politician glorifying violence to pass without action" and, as evidence, links to a story about Twitter adding a content warning to a Trump tweet. … [Read more...] about Trump’s call for crackdown on Twitter and Facebook now on Ajit Pai’s desk
To date, Warp Speed has invested more than $10 billion in eight vaccine candidates. Much of that money goes to “at-risk” purchasing of vaccines, which means the companies will produce hundreds of millions of doses that may wind up in the garbage if those candidates do not prove safe and effective. Three of the vaccines now are in large-scale efficacy trials, and interim looks at their data by independent safety and monitoring boards could reveal efficacy signals as early as October. If that happens, a vaccine could become quickly available through what’s known as an emergency use authorization (EUA), a regulatory pathway that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has for diagnostics, treatments, and vaccines. … [Read more...] about Leader of U.S. vaccine push says he‘ll quit if politics trumps science
