The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has filed a complaint alleging mistreatment of dogs at Hemopet, one of the nation's largest canine blood banks, a claim the nonprofit organization that runs the Southern California facility for retired racing greyhounds adamantly rejects. A volunteer firefighter was stabbed to death in New Jersey early Sunday, authorities said. Police received a call reporting a man had been stabbed near Tilton Avenue and Bank Street in Red Bank, New Jersey around 12:43 a.m. on Sunday, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said. Uber Driver Hits Parked Cars, Flips on Lower East Side When they arrived, they found 26-year-old Andrew Hill, of Red Bank. Hill was taken to Riverview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m., the prosecutor’s office said. Red Bank resident Demar Reevey, 23, has been charged with first degree murder and third degree possession of a weapon in connection with Hill’s death, according to the prosecutor’s office. A 24-year-old Virginia woman allegedly driving drunk in New Jersey over the weekend smashed into two parked cars, then switched seats with her also allegedly drunk friend, who crashed into another two vehicles, authorities say. Officers responding to a 911 call in Hoboken early Saturday found Jamila Banks, of Alexandria, Virginia, in the front passenger seat of her SUV. Janelle Green, a 23-year-old from Newark, was behind the wheel. Cells in umbilical cord blood are already being used to treat certain diseases, including leukemia and rare forms of anemia. But for all the excitement about umbilical cord cells, in many ways, this research is still in its infancy.Parents who are optimistic about that research future and want to save these cells have two options in the United States: Public not-for-profit cord banks and private cord banks.
