Sick of signing into TV apps all the time? There's an Apple TV for that. The company's streaming video box, CNET's favorite for Apple fans and big spenders, will roll out a new feature called "zero sign-on" as part of the update to tvOS 12, coming this fall.Apple says the feature will allow a subscriber to a cable service to immediately unlock the associated apps, without having to sign in to the individual apps at all. Many pay TV (cable, satellite and live TV streaming) subscriptions include access to numerous channel-specific streaming apps as well, but to gain access you need your pay TV credentials -- the username and password for your TV provider. Let's say your subscription to Charter Spectrum cable includes ESPN, Nick Jr. and a bunch of other channels. Previously you would have to sign in with your cable service log-in to gain access to the apps for ESPN, Nick Jr. and the rest on Apple TV. With zero sign-on, Apple says no sign-on credentials are needed at all. Instead, the … [Read more...] about Apple TV gains “zero sign-on” to ease subscription TV app access

Although Apple’s gaming track record has largely rewarded enthusiasm with disappointment, a new Apple TV trademark application discovered by Patently Apple indicates that the company is still interested in video games. The application, which Apple filed last week, expands the use of the Apple TV name for video game purposes — nothing else. The application is noteworthy because Apple’s original 2007 trademark for the first Apple TV covered computer hardware and set top boxes focused on photos, music, and videos, excluding games entirely, and no change was made when it debuted the fourth-generation Apple TV with app and game support in September 2015. Last year’s Apple TV 4K trademarks were similar, only briefly mentioning “computer games” among many other functions of the wireless black box. You say it while knowing full well that Steve Jobs set the stage for a radical new TV from Apple in 2011 by directly telling his biographer that he’d "finally cracked it," and that he wanted to create "an integrated television set that is completely easy to use," with "the simplest user interface you could imagine." You say that the future of TV is here even though every attempt to place a computer at the center of the living room experience has bombed catastrophically for nearly two decades, and that rivals like Microsoft and Google have each been floored by the challenges of television. You take … [Read more...] about Apple TV review: is this the future?
