The final season of Star Wars Rebels brings the tale of the Ghost crew and their Lothal rebellion to satisfying conclusion, and the Blu-ray set, available July 31 for $35, offers a deep dive into the animated show's creation and its narrative mysteries. For those who haven't seen Rebels, a quick primer: it centers around a crew of rebels primarily based on the Ghost -- essentially the show's Millennium Falcon -- as they battle the Empire on the Outer Rim world of Lothal. Its scope has expanded considerably since it premiered on Disney XD on 2014, continuing plot threads from The Clone Wars and tying directly into the events of the movies. With 16 episodes to wrap things up, Season 4 doesn't have much room for filler. The two-episode opener finishes up the Mandalore subplot (one of The Clone Wars plot threads) and is immediately followed by a pair of episodes that link the Ghost crew to the Rebel Alliance and tie in to the events of Rogue One -- essentially forming a pair of mini arcs. They … [Read more...] about Star Wars Rebels season 4 Blu-ray brings show to fitting end

Marin County is a slice of the waterside, picturesque land you probably envision when imagining Northern California. It's primarily recognized beyond the region for two things: the San Quentin prison (the state’s oldest, once housing Charles Manson) and filmmaking. George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch called Marin County home, and his company is responsible for most of the area's industry history. But on October 13, at a small theater where you could go see a standing comedy night every Tuesday this month, the local Mill Valley Film Festival is going to have its own historic moment—a Star Wars-related one at that. Attendees at this year’s event will have the opportunity to experience 25 minutes of filmmaking that hasn’t been seen by the public in decades. Wanna go see a movie? There's this new flick called "Star Wars"... George Lucas's space opera exploded into movie theatres 40 years ago, on 25 May 1977. It was an instant smash with fans queueing around the block to see it -- before coming back to line up again. Today, we recognise the film's groundbreaking special effects, the foundations of a vast mythical story universe, and the launch of a multimedia empire that transformed moviemaking. But what did the critics of the day think? Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert gave it the thumbs-up, while famously acerbic critic Pauline Kael was less impressed. Many reviewers noted similarities with the classic tales that inspired writer and director George Lucas, from westerns and samurai tales to "2001: A Space Odyssey". And several noted that the resonant, thought-provoking cinema of the 1970s was about to be swept away by something rather more escapist... "A grand and glorious film that may well be the smash hit of 1977, and certainly is the … [Read more...] about Spellbinding or dull? How critics reviewed ‘Star Wars’ in 1977
