New Delhi: Lenders to Aircel and UV Asset Reconstruction, which was to take over the defunct telco’s assets under the insolvency process, are planning to approach the Supreme Court after an appellate tribunal barred sale of its spectrum until government dues are cleared. Lenders, led by State Bank of India, and UVARCL fear that the resolution plans of troubled telcos Aircel and Reliance Communications will go kaput if the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal’s order is not set aside, three people aware with the development told ET. A three-judge bench of NCLAT on Wednesday upheld an appeal by the telecom department (DoT) against an insolvency court order approving the Aircel resolution plan, which included transfer of spectrum to UVARCL. Lenders were hoping to recover Rs 25,000-30,000 crore from Aircel and RCom resolution plans under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) against their claims of over Rs 1,16,000 crore. “This is a big setback for us,” said a banker … [Read more...] about Aircel lenders to move SC as appellate tribunal bars spectrum sale

Google veteran pans Tesla Autopilot: “We were doing better in 2010”
Few people have been working on self-driving cars longer than Chris Urmson. Urmson played a key role on Carnegie Mellon's team in all three of DARPA's famous Grand Challenges between 2004 and 2007. He then led Google's self-driving project for several years. Urmson left Google after being passed over to become the CEO of the spin-off company that became Waymo. “I’d been leading and building that team and, for all intents and purposes, general managing it for years,” Urmson told Bloomberg in a Thursday interview . “Of course I wanted to run the program.” Bloomberg asked Urmson about Tesla's Autopilot technology—and particularly Elon Musk's claim that Tesla vehicles will soon be capable of operating as driverless taxis. “It’s just not going to happen,” Urmson said. “It’s technically very impressive what they’ve done, but we were doing better in 2010.” That's a reference to Urmson's time at Google. Google started recruiting DARPA Grand Challenge veterans around 2009. Within a … [Read more...] about Google veteran pans Tesla Autopilot: “We were doing better in 2010”

Congressmen ask Biden admin to keep chip design software away from China
Don’t let American companies sell semiconductor design software to Chinese firms, two members of Congress are asking the Department of Commerce. Sen. Tom Cotton (R- Ark.) and Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Tex.) yesterday requested that electronic design automation (EDA) tools be designated as “foundational technologies” by the Department of Commerce. The label would require companies to obtain export licenses if they want to sell EDA tools to Chinese companies. The congressmen also requested in their letter to Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo that any fab worldwide that uses American tools be prevented from selling 14 nm or better chips to Chinese companies. The current leading edge in semiconductors is the 5 nm node, and currently, only Samsung and Taiwanese semiconductor company TSMC are producing chips commercially at that node. Restricting Chinese companies to 16 nm or larger could possibly keep them four generations off the leading edge. Semiconductors are incredibly … [Read more...] about Congressmen ask Biden admin to keep chip design software away from China
