For gamers who dare to be different, Asus has added AMD-based versions of its more traditional Intel/Nvidia-based FX505 and FX705 budget gaming laptops here at CES. In theory, the AMD models should be even more budget-friendly than their linemates, but that's not always the case. They're slated to ship by the end of March, but Asus hasn't provided any pricing. They'll incorporate the new AMD Ryzen 5 3550H CPU and Radeon RX 560X discrete graphics. Both laptops support FreeSync (AMD's variable-refresh technology for preventing tearing artifacts), but the 17-inch FX705DY's screen has more limited 60Hz-max latitude than the 15-inch's 48-120Hz refresh range. Unlike the FX504 we reviewed in July, the displays in these models have IPS screens -- not as fast as the TN panel we complained about, but they should look much better. The TUF line distinguishes itself from other budget gaming laptops with boasts of, well, toughness. They're built to MIL-STD-810G spec to … [Read more...] about Asus adds TUF gaming laptops at CES 2019 with AMD inside

Best cheap gaming laptops under $1,000 to get right now
There has never been a better time to be a cash-strapped PC gamer in need of a new laptop. Just about every PC maker has a model for $1,000 or less and they can do more than play old games at low quality settings. You'll want to make sure you get the most graphics power you can afford from the start since this can't be upgraded later, unlike memory or storage. If you're on a strict budget, go with one of Nvidia's Geforce GTX 1050 or 1050Ti graphics cards, which will give you good performance on newer games at medium or high settings with prices starting down around $600. If you can afford to spend closer to $1,000, you'll be better off in the long run getting a laptop with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 Max Q with 6GB of memory. Beyond the graphics chip, look for: Seventh- or eighth-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor At least 8GB of memoryAt least a 256GB solid-state drive (SSD), a combo of a 128GB SSD and hard drive or a large solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD)All … [Read more...] about Best cheap gaming laptops under $1,000 to get right now

At this year's CES, Acer unveiled some "hearty updates" to the Nitro 5 laptop.Today, I bring you a hearty discount: For a limited time, and while supplies last, Best Buy has the Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop for $679.99 shipped (plus tax). Regular price: $800.get your game on(For what it's worth, Ebates offers a 1-percent rebate on Best Buy purchases -- not a fortune, but last I checked, $6.79 was still $6.79.)I can't say this is the sexiest laptop I've ever seen (the red keyboard backlight helps), but it definitely has the horsepower you need for high-end gaming. That starts with an 8th-gen Intel Core i5-8300H mobile processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB solid-state drive. Of particular importance, the Nitro 5 has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics processor with 4GB of dedicated video memory. That's enough for both gaming and VR, should you decide to run an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. (Alas, it's just shy of the requirements for the Vive Pro.)The Nitro 5 offers a 15.6-inch screen with a … [Read more...] about The Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop is just $680
