Google on Tuesday announced Anthos, a generally-available platform for managing applications on premise or in the cloud -- whether that's Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or its competitors like Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure. The software-based platform is based on Cloud Services Platform, which Google rolled out last year for building and managing services in GCP or on-premise. Anthos currently supports on-premise environments and GCP, and it will soon be "everywhere," Urs Hölzle, Google's SVP for technical infrastructure, told reporters earlier in the week, "so you can use one consistent, one open source-based approach across all environments." "This is really the stack for the next 20 years," he said. The move to open up Anthos to other clouds acknowledges the growing reliance on multi-cloud strategies. Increasingly, enterprises are taking a cloud-first approach to IT, even as hybrid models still abound. Yet concerns about performance and vendor lock-in are … [Read more...] about Google’s app management platform aims to connect clouds — even AWS, Microsoft Azure

Microsoft is rolling out new dashboards in its Microsoft 365 enterprise bundle to help security and compliance officers deal with new privacy laws. Microsoft 365, which includes Office 365, Windows 10, and Enterprise Mobility + Security, is gaining a new workspace for managing compliance with Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other regions' laws. The Compliance Manager risk-assessment dashboard helps security and compliance professionals manage regulatory compliance tasks. Under GDPR, any EU resident can request data that's been collected about them. The updated compliance manager helps Microsoft 365 users handle these data-subject requests. California's new privacy laws offer similar protections, including giving consumers the right to request that personal information is deleted and to easily transfer data to other services. Microsoft VP and chief legal officer Brad Smith believes US lawmakers in 2019 will begin pushing ahead with federal … [Read more...] about Struggling to comply with GDPR? In January 2017, the UK Government’s Cabinet Office issued guidelines outlining what department heads needed to consider when putting services or data into the public cloud.Along with its 14 Security Cloud Principles, the guidance confirmed that “it’s possible for public sector organisations to safely put highly personal and sensitive data into the public cloud. Many UK departments have made this decision based on risk management assessments once they have put appropriate safeguards in place”.Following on from the introduction of the Government’s 2013 Cloud First policy, the issue of these guidelines showed that the movement of UK public data to the cloud is now ‘the new norm’. Although Departments remain free to choose an alternative to the cloud if they wish, they now need to demonstrate that it offers better value for money before they do so.The end result is that highly sensitive information about all of us (including names, … [Read more...] about Public cloud API security: How safe is our data?
