Wednesday at the “She the People” presidential forum held in Houston, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) claimed America has only twelve years to address climate change and environmental issues. “I have come from a black and brown community. I’ve spent more years as a mayor of Newark, New Jersey than I have in the United States Senate. And when it comes to environmental issues, climate change, we have 12 years,” Booker stated.Booker also stated children are having an easier time finding unleaded gasoline than unleaded water. “The reality is, if you live in a community like mine, the environmental urgencies, the life or death issues are happening right now,” Booker claimed. “So whether it’s toxic water where we have a nation where children — millions of our children find it easier to find unleaded gasoline than unleaded water.” He added, “Whether it’s asthma rates in communities like mine that are multiple times … [Read more...] about Cory Booker: ‘We Have 12 Years’ to Address Climate Change Issues
Climate change when will the world end
Despite what the world’s least-interesting talking gecko would have you believe, no one likes handing over payments for car insurance. But there’s one thing everyone likes even less: suddenly paying for expensive repairs not covered by your insurance. Similarly, opponents of action on climate change like to complain about the costs of eliminating fossil fuel emissions. Typically, this implies that the alternative—ignoring climate change—is free. It is not. A new study by Jeremy Martinich and Allison Crimmins of the US Environmental Protection Agency provides the most detailed estimate yet of the economic costs of climate change in the United States. They found that taking action to reduce emissions could save us at least $200 billion per year by the end of the century. Further ReadingState-by-state climate analysis shows warming hits some harder than others The effort involves the use of models to simulate the ways different economic sectors are affected by … [Read more...] about Limiting climate change could save the US a ton of money
The United States is poised to take a powerful economic hit from climate change over the next century. Heat waves, wildfires, extreme weather events and rising sea levels could cost the country hundreds of billions of dollars in lost labor, reduced crop yields, health problems and crumbling infrastructure. A report authored by hundreds of U.S. climate scientists from 13 federal agencies presents a stark picture of the country’s fate due to climate change. The Fourth National Climate Assessment, released November 23, predicts the U.S. economy will shrink by as much as 10 percent by the end of the century if global warming continues apace.A separate report released November 27 by the United Nations Environment Programme reveals that in 2017, global emissions of carbon dioxide — a major driver of warming — rose for the first time in three years. That suggests that the nations that promised to curb emissions as part of the historic 2015 Paris agreement are falling … [Read more...] about Here’s how much climate change could cost the U.S.
A new report analyzes the effects of climate change in the US now and what the country could look like by 2100. The findings are dire, predicting severe sea-level rise, more insect-borne disease, and big increases in precipitation. Some experts think the Trump administration’s decision to release the report, mandated by a 1990 law, on Black Friday was an attempt to hide these stark realities. On Black Friday, as many Americans were shopping or spending time with family, the Trump administration published a major report on climate change. The study, called the “National Climate Assessment,” is the fourth in an ongoing series mandated by a 1990 law. It looks at how climate change is affecting the US now and what the country might look like by the end of the century. Its findings are dire. The researchers found that the average temperature in the US rose by 1.2 degrees Fahrenheit from 1951 to 2010 and that an additional 2 degrees more is … [Read more...] about The Trump administration released a dire new report on climate change that predicts hundreds of billions of dollars in economic losses
0 Have your say New expert report on global warming from the Intergorvernment Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is ‘frightening’ but there is still hope for humanity. In 1845, Sir John Franklin set sail from Canada’s Baffin Bay with two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, on a quest to find the fabled North-West Passage. In the worst disaster in the history of British polar exploration, Franklin and his crew were never seen again after their ships became trapped in the ice.Today, after the world’s average temperature has risen by about one degree Celsius, the sea ice has retreated so much that tourists can take a cruise through the previously impassable waters.Talking about climate change in terms of the global average can sometimes make it sound like a minor problem. If we turned the thermostat up by 1C, we’d hardly notice until we came to pay the bill. But the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of the Earth’s lower … [Read more...] about Leader comment: Despite ‘scary’ climate change report, hope remains
