Great apes at San Diego Zoo receive experimental COVID-19 vaccine for animals

· March 4, 2021 ·

For the most up-to-date news and information about the coronavirus pandemic, visit the WHO website . Eight great apes at the San Diego Zoo have each received two doses of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine developed for animals, National Geographic reports . Three orangutans and five bonobos received both shots of the vaccine while distracted by treats, and have reportedly not had any negative side effects. The zoo will soon be able to check for antibodies to know if the vaccine worked as intended. A Hong Kong pharmaceutical company initially developed this experimental vaccine for use on cats and dogs; using it on the great apes was a calculated risk. Nadine Lamberski, chief conservation and wildlife health officer at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, told National Geographic, "It's not like we randomly grab a vaccine and give it to a novel species. A lot of thought and research goes into it. What's the risk of doing it and what's the risk of not doing it? Our motto is, … [Read more...] about Great apes at San Diego Zoo receive experimental COVID-19 vaccine for animals

The 11 Worst Things About iOS 7

· September 20, 2013 ·

If you ask someone what they think of Apple's new iOS 7 software, you'll likely get a strong reaction. We're talking about actual baby tears . At the surface level — as with anything — beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This contrasting sentiment has seeped into many aspects of how people view the new mobile operating system. SEE ALSO: The 16 Best Things About iOS 7 First, it's important to note that it's different. Really different. Many people don't like change, and similar to most software updates, there are kinks. A new Tumblr account called Sloppy UI has even curated issues from users across the web. Below, take a look at our biggest complaints about iOS 7 so far: … [Read more...] about The 11 Worst Things About iOS 7

Rest in Peace, iPod

· January 29, 2014 ·

Oct. 23, 2001: The iPod The very first iPod launched with "1,000 songs in your pocket." It had 5GB of storage space, weighed 6.5 ounces, featured a 160 x 128 pixel display and FireWire connectivity and cost $399. July 2002: Second Generation iPod As well as an increased capacity topping out at 20GB, the second generation iPod got an important new feature -- Windows compatibility. This came not via iTunes, but through MUSICMATCH Jukebox, with software called "iPod for Windows." April 2003: Third Generation iPod 2003 was a big year for the Apple iPod. In April, the third generation model was introduced. Thinner and lighter, this complete redesign now boasted a touch-sensitive interface, dock connector and 30GB capacity. USB syncing and the launch of the iTunes Music Store solidified the early iPod ecosystem. These elements helped Apple hit some milestones in 2003 -- one million iPods sold (which rose to two million by the end of the year) and 25 … [Read more...] about Rest in Peace, iPod

· September 11, 2014 ·

Apple 's giveaway of U2's new album has hit a sour note with some users who are complaining that the forced download is eating up precious space on their iPhones. Erotic and Violent Images Cloud Vision, Study Finds

· August 11, 2005 ·

When people see violent or erotic images, they fail to process whatever they see next, according to new research. Scientists are calling the effect "attentional rubbernecking." “We observed that people fail to detect visual images that appeared one-fifth of a second after emotional images, whereas they can detect those images with little problem after viewing neutral images,” said Vanderbilt University psychologist David Zald. The effect is akin to rubbernecking on the highway, Zald and his colleagues say. Your brain might suggest you watch the road ahead, but your emotions force you to look at the accident on the side of the road. Research subjects were handed a stack of pictures that included pleasant landscapes and architectural photos. They were told to search for a particular image. Negative images were placed anywhere from two to eight spots before the search target. The closer the negative image was to the target picture, the more frequently people failed to spot … [Read more...] about Erotic and Violent Images Cloud Vision, Study Finds
