Why Elon Musk should read Facebook’s latest transparency report

May 18, 2022 by www.theverge.com Leave a Comment

Today, let’s talk about Facebook’s latest effort to make the platform more comprehensible to outsiders — and how its findings inform our current, seemingly endless debate over whether you can have a social network and free speech, too. Start with an observation: last week, Pew Research reported that large majorities of Americans — Elon Musk, for example ! — believe that social networks are censoring posts based on the political viewpoints they express. Here’s Emily A. Vogels : Rising slightly from previous years , roughly three-quarters of Americans (77%) now think it is very or somewhat likely that social media sites intentionally censor political viewpoints they find objectionable, including 41% who say this is very likely. Majorities across political parties and ideologies believe these sites engage in political censorship, but this view is especially widespread among Republicans. Around nine-in-ten Republicans (92%), including GOP leaners, say social media sites … [Read more...] about Why Elon Musk should read Facebook’s latest transparency report

Audio player loading… Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has announced it is building a powerful new AI supercomputer in collaboration with Cerebras Systems, maker of the world’s largest chip. The new system will be made up of a combination of HPE Superdome Flex servers and Cerebras CS-2 accelerators, which are powered by the monstrous Wafer-Scale Engine 2 (WSE-2) processor. The nameless supercomputer is expected to go live later this summer at the Leibniz Supercomputing Center (LRZ) in Bavaria, providing researchers with a new resource to help accelerate research projects on topics ranging from medical imaging to aerospace engineering. New AI supercomputer Unveiled by Cerebras in April last year , the WS2-E is designed expressly to accelerate AI training and inference workloads. Larger-than-30TB hard drives are coming much sooner than expected

Audio player loading… Inside of hard disk drives are platters which hold all your data; these are all manufactured by one company in Japan called Showa Denko which has announced (opens in new tab) it expects to “realize near-line HDD having storage capacity of more than 30TB" by the end of 2023. Deciphering that statement, we’d assume it will provide platters with a storage capacity of more than 3TB, sometime in 2023, to partners such as Toshiba, Seagate and Western Digital, who will then produce the hard disk drives , targeting hyperscalers and data centers operators. We’d expect some of them to end up in NAS and 3.5-inch external hard drives , but that won’t be the main target markets, as performance is likely to be optimized for nearline usage. Race to 30TB Showa Denko has now started shipment of the platters that will go into new 26TB Ultrastar DC HC670 UltraSMR hard disk drives announced by Western Digital only a few days ago. … [Read more...] about Larger-than-30TB hard drives are coming much sooner than expected

The Google Pixel Foldable is reportedly delayed to 2023

May 26, 2022 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

At Google's recent I/O conference , we heard about a lot of upcoming Google hardware, including the Pixel 6a , Pixel 7 , Pixel Watch , and even a Pixel Tablet, which isn't due out until sometime in 2023. We didn't hear anything about a Pixel foldable , though. Still, we know something is in the works since the Google Camera app included the detection flag "isPixel2022Foldable" alongside flags for other Pixel devices. So what's the deal? The Elec reports that the Google foldable is delayed until 2023. This would mark the second time the foldable has been delayed, as it was originally due out late last year. It seems that the original plan was to release the product alongside Android 12L, aka 12.1, the tablet-and-foldables-focused Android release. Google often tries to develop Android builds and new hardware simultaneously, but making hardware is difficult. Google and Samsung are partnering up for Wear OS and the Google Tensor SoC, and the Pixel foldable is likewise … [Read more...] about The Google Pixel Foldable is reportedly delayed to 2023

Mysterious ancient giant eggs Down Under laid by Aussie “demon ducks of doom”

May 27, 2022 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

Over 65,000 years ago, large flightless birds dubbed "Demon Ducks of Doom" roamed prehistoric Australia. The creatures stood over six and a half feet (two meters) tall, weighed over 440 pounds (200 kgs), and sported massive beaks. They also produced giant cantaloupe-sized eggs that may have served as a food source for early human inhabitants, eventually contributing to the extinction of the demon ducks, according to a new paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Technically known as Genyornis newtoni or mihirung paringmal ("thunder bird"), the species was first described in 1896 based on the discovery of a fossilized left femur excavated from a site at Lake Callabonna in South Australia. Further excavation yielded many more fragments of avian fossils and eventually mostly complete specimens, including the cranium. Similar specimens have since been found at other sites in New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia. The species went … [Read more...] about Mysterious ancient giant eggs Down Under laid by Aussie “demon ducks of doom”
