Some of us love our group chats. Others of us hate them and would love nothing more than to leave them all. But why do we want to leave? Maybe you’ve had someone leave a group without giving you a reason as to why, and maybe it hurt a little bit. Vox.com’s Kaitlyn Tiffany and I are here to help you work through that pain with this episode of Why’d You Push That Button. First, I chat with my friend Liz who tells us about her current and past group chat drama. She’s actually very undramatic and seems to tell it like it is. I like this about her. Then Kaitlyn interviews Maggie Lange, who has written for GQ about never leaving group chats, ever. She’s pro-mute. Kaitlyn and I then take all our concerns to Asha Sharma, director of product management for Messenger, who tells us all about why people actually leave group chats and what the teens are up to these days. Feel free to subscribe anywhere you typically get your podcasts, or listen to the show below. You … [Read more...] about Why did you leave the group chat?

WhatsApp has announced a series of changes to how users interact in group chats. Starting today for iOS and Android users, WhatsApp groups can now include a description to detail the purpose, guidelines, or topics for the group. The group description will be shared with each new member of a WhatsApp group. Also launching today is Catch Up, a feature for a quick recap of messages that have mentioned or replied to you since you’ve been away. Catch Up will be indicated with a new @ button in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. Group creators can now no longer be removed from the groups they started, the company said in a blog post. New administrative powers can restrict which group members can change a group’s icon and description or determine which users have administrative permissions. Participants in a group are now able to search for users by name. Multi-way video conferencing and "hanging out" sounds awfully similar to Google Hangouts, just marketed to younger audiences for casual use instead of towards education and business customers. Up to 16 different people can all join in on one video call. Voice-only calls can contain up to 32 participants. End users have the option to join as voice-only and as observers that can type into the group chat. Many popular Lenses used for regular video messages can be applied during video calls.
