President Donald Trump's national security team is looking at options to counter China that include the U.S. government building a super-fast 5G wireless network, a senior administration official has said. The official, confirming the gist of a report from Axios.com, said the option was being debated at a low level in the administration and was six to eight months away from being considered by the president himself. The 5G network concept is aimed at addressing what officials see as China's threat to U.S. cyber security and economic security."We want to build a network so the Chinese can’t listen to your calls," the senior official said. "We have to have a secure network that doesn’t allow bad actors to get in. We also have to ensure the Chinese don't take over the market and put every non-5G network out of business."Government development of a wireless network would likely raise alarms in the private telecommunications industry. Another option includes having a 5G network … [Read more...] about US government could build 5G network

As our civilization has industrialized over the last couple centuries, global energy consumption has spiked more than twentyfold with no end in sight. When demand outstrips what we can reap from Earth and its vicinity, what will our power-craving descendants do? A bold solution: the Dyson Sphere. This megastructure—usually conceived of as a gigantic shell enclosing the sun, lined with mirrors or solar panels—is designed to collect every iota of a star's energetic output. In the … [Read more...] about Could We Build a Dyson Sphere?
A lot of user experience professionals who are active in our industry today have faced the question “How to build a UX portfolio if I have never worked in UX?” when starting their career. Let’s be honest: it’s a bit unfair. “Portfolio” is a mandatory field in almost every job application form, regardless of the level you’re applying to. But wait. I’m only able to be hired as a UX Designer when I have a certain number of projects on my portfolio. But if I have never worked in UX, how am I supposed to build a portfolio of interesting and relevant UX case studies? You might be thinking: “well, with my school work”. The reality is: not everyone goes through four or five years of design school before trying to find a job. As much as education systems sound great in theory, the reality is way less linear than that. People come to UX from many different places. They are developers, engineers, project managers, game … [Read more...] about How to build a UX portfolio with no work experience

You could fly on Titan, just by flapping your arms. So what are we waiting for? Let's move to Saturn's largest moon! The solar system’s second-largest moon has an atmosphere, it has weather, seasons, it has water and lakes, there are plentiful energy resources and, well, there's that flying thing. Living in 14% gravity would be fun. What's not to like? "It's the most Earth-like place in the solar system," says Amanda Hendrix, a planetary scientist who worked for 12 years at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and co-wrote the recent book Beyond Earth: Our Path To A New Home In The Planets."The number one reason why Titan is exciting is that it has an atmosphere that provides one and a half times the surface pressure that we feel on Earth – there's no other moon or planet in the solar system that gives us such a nice atmosphere," says Hendrix. What that means is that humans wouldn't have to wear pressure suits like on our Moon, or on Mars. Scientists also … [Read more...] about The tech we need to build a colony on Titan
