What is the future of luxury? No, it’s not flying cars.Unveiled at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, the BMW Vision Future Luxury concept describes a vision of the future that should be familiar to car buyers by now, one that uses technology to both improve efficiency and turn cars into large smartphones. The body is rendered in carbon fiber and aluminum, and features a sleek design that not only looks striking but – according to BMW – reduces drag for better fuel efficiency. It also features the laser headlights set to debut on the 2015 i8 sports car.The itself styling seems to be borrowed from the Pininfarina-designed Gran Lusso Coupe, and could indicate a new, more evocative direction BMW plans to take with future models. For the interior, BMW used a process called “subtractive modeling”. This involved designing the interior in layers with different materials, including structural aluminum, surface carbon fiber, and wood and leather trim. This allowed … [Read more...] about BMW’s Vision Future concept is a prophecy written in carbon fiber and aluminum

A new report finds BMW is in the early stages of developing a fuel-sipping sports sedan aimed squarely at the Tesla Model S.Tentatively called either i5 or i7, the sedan will share its platform with the next generation of the long-wheelbase 5 Series that will be sold exclusively in China. The car will borrow the bulk of its suspension, brake and steering components from the next 5, a move that will allow BMW to benefit from economies of scale.Power will come from a highly efficient plug-in hybrid drivetrain consisting of a gasoline-burning four-cylinder mounted in the engine bay and two electric motors located over the rear axle. A high-capacity battery pack installed under the passenger compartment will allow the sedan to drive on electricity alone for about 80 miles. The driver will be able to alternate between front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive depending on which power source is being used to spin the wheels. It is too early to provide concrete performance … [Read more...] about The ultimate Tesla-killing machine? BMW preparing Model S fighter
BMW Motorrad, the Munich-based automaker’s motorcycle-building division, has introduced a new bike called Concept 101 at the annual Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance that took place last weekend on the shores of Lake Como, Italy. The Concept 101 was unveiled alongside BMW’s retro-flavored 3.0 CSL Homage concept.Built on the existing K 1600 platform, the Concept 101 was designed jointly by BMW and California-based Roland Sands Design as the perfect embodiment of American touring. Visually, it adopts a striking, futuristic design with a tall front end, a drop-shaped body, and a tapered rear end. All told, the Concept 101 is markedly more aerodynamic than the K 1600 on which it’s based. The sleek body is accented by two integrated side cases that are aerodynamically designed to reduce drag, thin LED tail lamps, sculpted surfaces, and a pair of long exhaust pipes with three outlets. Brushed aluminum, dark wood, and carbon fiber trim adds an elegant touch to … [Read more...] about BMW’s Concept 101 is elegant, sinister, and futuristic at the same time
Automakers are continuing to pump out Vision Gran Turismo concepts for the Gran Turismo video game franchise and Hyundai is next in line to reveal the future of its design.New teasers have surfaced for Hyundai’s N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.Hyundai’s “ultimate concept car,” the N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo is inspired by aeronautics with an ultra low-slung stance with fighter jet design elements like the cockpit and wing-shaped headlights and taillights. Its styling, “blurs the line between air and asphalt,” says Hyundai.Besides building design credibility, the N 2025 Vision GT supposedly offers insight into the future of Hyundai’s N Performance characteristics, and marks the debut of Hyundai’s sub-brand. The concept highlights “sustainable technology and race car design, truly representing the future potential of Hyundai N,” the automaker said in a previous … [Read more...] about Hyundai reveals new teasers of its ‘ultimate concept car,’ the N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo
BMW is bringing its technology-laden Vision Future Luxury concept to North America,First unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show back in April, this potentially prophetic luxury sedan will be shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance August 14.The concept appears unchanged from when it was shown in Beijing. The styling is much more expressive than anything on current BMWs, and is rendered in weight-saving carbon fiber and aluminum.Similar materials were used in the interior, but designers created the final shape using a process called “subtractive modeling.” Built-up layers of wood, leather, carbon fiber, and aluminum were “milled down,” as if the entire interior was machined by CNC.The laser headlights – shared with the 2015 BMW i8 sports car – are the only parts of this car that are production ready, but the Vision Future Luxury articulates BMW’s interest in using more lightweight materials and, perhaps, adopting less-staid … [Read more...] about BMW’s Vision Future Luxury concept brings tomorrow’s tech to Pebble Beach
At the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), BMW is hoping to illuminate the path to the future. The German brand will introduce its Organic Light concept at the event, which will display organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. The company also plans to unveil an intelligent version of its Laserlight system as well.In case you didn’t know, OLEDs are an offshoot of LEDs where the light source is a thin organic film of hydrocarbon chains rather than a pointed array of bulbs. The design allows for a more uniform spread of light than LEDs, while still being electrically efficient. Most existing OLEDs aren’t bright enough to replace LEDs in the headlights and brake lights, so they are generally relegated to taillight sections for now. They can be used to create exotic, progressive designs though, with individual modules activating separately in exciting new shapes and contours. Because they don’t need reflectors and other optics, they also take up less … [Read more...] about Intelligent Laserlight and OLED technology? BMW is bringing the future to CES 2015
There’s a new BMW 7 Series on the way, and even though it hasn’t graduated from its camo yet, we have a pretty good idea of what the car will be like. The most notable change for the sixth-generation is the powertrain lineup. BMW is quickly unwrapping its new modular engine series, one that includes three, four, and six-cylinder units. According to Car and Driver, a choice selection of the modular six pots will make their way into the upcoming full-size luxury car.Like Jaguar’s Ingenium engine line, there are shared components throughout the powertrain range, making the motors cheaper and easier to produce. Given the status of the vehicle they’ll be be fitted to, however, you can bet the modular engines will raise the bar for efficiency, refinement, and power. The 7 Series will also debut BMW’s new rear-wheel drive architecture. The platform will eventually serve as the foundation for vehicles all across the German automaker’s line, and will reportedly … [Read more...] about Next-gen BMW 7 Series to gain modular engine architecture, shed close to 500 pounds
Land Rover has long been the off-road standard of the world. And even though its most famous model, the Defender, wildly lacks in tech, the British carmaker just might lead the world in automotive tech – from this moment forward. The Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept is perhaps one of the most important and impressive vehicles I’ve ever covered. It uses lasers. It has touch screens, everywhere. Heck, it is a touch screen. It knows where you’re looking and puts information there. It can be driven remotely. And that’s just the beginning. Vision technologyWe already reported that the Discovery Vision Concept has a “Transparent Hood” which uses cameras and augmented reality to make the hood disappear during off-road and parking scenarios. This, as it turns out, is just the tip of the iceberg. Not only is the windshield of the Discovery Vision capable of displaying images; every single piece of body glass – including the panoramic moon … [Read more...] about Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept: The future of Cars or techno overload?
When BMW began rolling out crossover coupe variants of every one of its SUVs, like the 2015 BMW X4, we knew Mercedes-Benz and Audi would have to respond eventually – as much as it pained us.And although the hideous, hunchbacked BMW X6 has been cruising the planet for six years without challenge, Mercedes is finally taking a swing at the hulking beast with its forthcoming 2015 MLC model.Previewed above in Concept Coupe form, slated to debut at the Beijing Motor Show on April 20th, it’s clear Mercedes designers haven’t disguised their X6-fighting intentions, as, well, the thing looks just like an X6 with an embiggened GLA grille. When the thing goes into production, it’ll be based upon the ML-Class chassis and include much of the same off-roady bits as its full-roofed brother. Just like the ML, the MLC will also be built in Alabama. This means that the majority of sales should come from the U.S. and China. What do you think of the looks of the new Mercedes … [Read more...] about Mercedes-Benz previews future BMW X6 rival in Concept Coupe SUV form ahead of Beijing
The BMW 7 Series has gone head-to-head against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class for decades, but the Munich-based automaker has never built a true competitor for the S-Class Coupe, which was known as the CL-Class up until recently. That might change soon, as a new report coming out of Germany claims BMW executives have finally decided to build a range-topping coupe.Tentatively called 9 Series, the coupe will ride on a modified version of the platform that’s currently being developed to underpin the next Rolls-Royce Phantom. It will be every bit as large as it sounds, but its weight will be kept in check thanks to the use of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, ultra-high-tensile steel, and aluminum. The 9’s design will allegedly be inspired by the elegant Vision Future Luxury Concept (pictured) that was presented last year at the Beijing Motor Show and, to a lesser extent, by the recently-introduced 2016 7. Surprisingly, enthusiast … [Read more...] about Could BMW launch a range-topping, Rolls-Royce-based coupe dubbed 9 Series?
