SpaceX and Elon Musk have been in the news a lot in recent days, both because of financial disclosures and the rocket company founder's musings on Twitter about his current space obsession—the Big Falcon Rocket or BFR. There has been a lot to process, so here's our best attempt to make sense of what Musk has said and what it may really mean. Musk started breaking news about SpaceX rocket designs about two weeks ago, so we'll start there. Mini BFR Ship On Wednesday, November 7, Musk tweeted that the "Falcon 9 second stage will be upgraded to be like a mini-BFR Ship." He added that this upgraded second stage could be ready to fly by June 2019. This prompted a flurry of speculation that SpaceX may be taking steps toward making the second stage of its Falcon 9 rocket—the part of the booster that presently inserts a payload into orbit and then burns up upon reentry to Earth's atmosphere—fully reusable. However, this was not to be the case. Later, Musk clarified that … [Read more...] about What is going on with SpaceX and all these Big Falcon Rocket changes?
Big falcon rocket
SpaceX’s future massive rocket, the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), has a new name. Writing from his personal Twitter account, CEO Elon Musk said that the transportation portion of the craft, currently known as the Big Falcon Spaceship (BFS), will now be called Starship, while the booster portion (the bit with the actual rockets) will be called Super Heavy. Plans for the 387-foot Big Falcon Rocket were officially revealed back in September. Eventually, the company hopes that it will replace the company’s existing Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Dragon rockets. The craft is currently being developed at the Port of Los Angeles, at an expected cost of $5 billion and will be capable of taking up to 100 tons of cargo or 100 passengers as far as Mars. SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said the company hopes to start doing unmanned launch tests of the new rocket in late 2019. If all goes well, Musk believes that this could be followed by an initial unmanned flight to Mars in 2022 with a … [Read more...] about Elon Musk renames Big Falcon Rocket to ‘Starship’
Elon Musk has announced the renaming of SpaceX’s biggest and still-to-be-built rockets, revealing it will now be known as Starship.Until now, the rocket booster has been known as Big Falcon Rocket or BFR – although some believe the F in the name stood for something else. The two-stage ship is designed to be fully reusable and will eventually replace the company’s Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy and Dragon rockets, the company says.Musk revealed the name change for BFR on his Twitter account, before going into some extra details about the ship’s various names.Starship refers to the crew-carrying upper stage of the ship, he said, adding that the rocket booster itself is called Super Heavy. He also gave an insight into some of SpaceX’s plans for the distant future, responding to one commenter who suggested that the ship could not be called Starship unless it was sent on a mission to a different star system, by announcing “later versions will”.Starship is … [Read more...] about Elon Musk renames SpaceX’s Big Falcon Rocket
ELON Musk has shared concept renders of his "Big F***ing Rocket", the craft that will soon fly a mystery passenger around the Moon. The launch system, also known as the Big Falcon Rocket, is also expected to one day take humans to Mars. Musk's new graphics show off a streamlined system, with a finned craft attached to the top of a giant booster. According to previous figures, the spaceship itself will measure 157 feet tall, while the booster will be even bigger at 191 feet. It's the creation of Musk's SpaceX rocket company, which is hoping to use the BFR for manned missions to Mars But it's also set to be used for a mysterious trip around the Moon – a stunt first announced by Musk back in 2017. SpaceX first announced its Moon mission back in February 2017, but details were light at the time. The rocket firm originally planned to send two private citizens on a space trip around Earth's closest neighbour, using the company's Big Falcon Rocket. Last week, SpaceX confirmed that they … [Read more...] about Elon Musk reveals pics of ‘Big F***ing Rocket’ that will fly mystery passenger around the MOON
Even Elon Musk can still be impressed by the size of his company's rockets. The SpaceX CEO recently retweeted a video, produced by the California-based production studio Corridor Crew. The video, which Musk called "cool," features visual effects (VFX) artist Wren Weichman attempting to translate the massive size of a Falcon 9 rocket into something the human brain can comprehend. So, just how large is a Falcon 9? By the numbers, the Falcon stands 230 feet (70 meters) tall, or roughly the height of a 21-story building. But how large is that? Human brains have a hard time creating an accurate mental image of massive objects without some sense of scale. That's where the filmmakers came in. [The Evolution of SpaceX's Rockets in Pictures] Most people have never seen a rocket up close, so it's incredibly difficult to comprehend exactly how large 230 feet is with nothing but a featureless sky as the backdrop (as seen in most rocket photos and videos). In the … [Read more...] about Wrap Your Head Around the Huge Size of SpaceX’s Falcon Rockets in This Epic Video
