Working with web browsers, productivity tools, and other tasks can usually be better accomplished with higher resolutions, but what about games? Higher resolutions require an immense amount of graphics processing power, so what should you be aiming for when looking at a new display? Display resolutions One of the major factors to consider when choosing a new display is the resolution. 1080p is the most popular configuration used today, but 1440p and 4K are slowly acquiring market share. Here are the resolutions we'll be working with when selecting a new monitor (or TV if you wish to get into couch gaming): 1280 x 720 - HD / 720p. 1920 x 1080 - FHD (Full HD) / 1080p. 2560 x 1440 - QHD/WQHD (Quad HD) / 1440p. 3840 x 2160 - UHD (Ultra HD) / 4K 2160p. 7680×4320 - FUHD (Full Ultra HD) / 8K 4320p. Best gaming monitors The 4K resolution is considered the successor to 1080p. It doubles the horizontal and vertical resolution, so you can begin to understand just what's being asked of your … [Read more...] about 1080p vs. 1440p vs. 4K: Which resolution is best for gaming?

The basicsHDR is a confusing subject, to say the least. On a basic level, it's a standard that improves monitor brightness, contrast and color range well beyond current displays. It has the potential to punch up movies, games and graphics in a way that's much more noticeable than the resolution boost offered by 4K.For TVs and projectors, consumers are mostly concerned with what kind of HDR their set supports, whether it be HDR 10, HDR 10+ or Dolby Vision (that's another discussion). Dolby Vision is currently the king of those standards, as it allows scenes in films and TV shows to be played back as the creators intended. Regardless of which type of HDR TV you choose, though, you can be sure it meets minimum standards for contrast, color gamut, bit depth (10 bits) and brightness (1,000 nits minimum, but less for OLED screens). However, PC monitors support HDR 10 only, and most can't reach the required 1,000 nits of brightness, so other features and specifications are more important. … [Read more...] about How to buy an HDR monitor
I'm picky about keyboards for speed typing, but fortunately the Aero 15X has one of the best I've tried, thanks to the slightly concave keys, short travel and satisfyingly solid rebound. As before, it's backlit with Gigabyte's Fusion tech, which lights up each key individually with up to 16 million colors -- the laptop's only bit of gaming flash.Like on many other Windows 10 laptops, the touchpad on Gigabyte's flagship is just okay. The level of friction is good, click pressure isn't too heavy and tapping works well. However, it occasionally mis-detected my palm, and doesn't support three- or four-finger Windows 10 gestures used for summoning Cortana and other functions. Gamers and serious graphics users will want a mouse, but the touchpad will at least do in a pinch.Speaking of peripherals, the Aero 15X has a generous array of high-speed ports for power users. You get one Thunderbolt, three USB 3.1 ports, SD card slot, HDMI 2.0, mini-DP and even an RJ-45 ethernet port. You can squeeze … [Read more...] about Gigabyte Aero 15X review: the best lightweight gaming laptop yet
