Why Are Tripod Heads Important? If you’re just starting out and building your kit , you may be wondering whether you should bother with a tripod head at all. Some tripods come packaged with one, while others are designed to work with various options depending on the intended use. Do you really need a tripod? To get the most out of your tripod, you’ll want to invest in a good head to pair it with. A well-engineered tripod head allows a photographer or videographer to get the angles they need and lock the camera securely in place without hand-holding. You don’t have to spend over a grand on one, but it’s worth it to put a little money down, especially if you know you’ll be using a tripod often. Landscape photographers, wildlife shooters, and people that do a lot of night photography can all benefit from a sturdy tripod head. Like any other piece of kit, a tripod head is a tool. Which one you need comes down to what and how you shoot. If you’re shooting in the wild regularly, … [Read more...] about The Best Tripod Heads of 2022

Best monitor 2022: the best monitors for every budget
Editor's Note: July 2022 We've started the second-half of the year, so you know what that means: all those major product announcements back in January are now hitting the store shelves, whether digitally or at local brick-and-mortar retailers, and many of the best monitors have gotten updates this year. This includes a new entry on our list, the Gigabyte M32UC, an UHD curved gaming monitor that hits a sweet spot between price, performance, and features that make it a standout choice for gamers on a budget. - John Loeffler, US Computing Editor The best monitor for you will obviously depend on what you need it to do, whether it's gaming, photo editing, or including important features like picture-in-picture or multiple input sources. Fortunately, there is a monitor for every need on the market, but unfortunately, there are a lot of monitors with opaque names that make it nearly impossible to sift through them all to find the one you want. The computing team has done a lot … [Read more...] about Best monitor 2022: the best monitors for every budget
My iPad Pro would be the best tablet ever if Apple borrowed this Huawei pad feature
Audio player loading… While I often consider my iPad Pro a pretty great tablet, it's not perfect - and with Huawei launching a new slate that could hit our list of the best tablets , I'm reminded of a common issue I have with Apple's iPads. The new tablet is an updated version of the Huawei MatePad Pro called... well, with the same name, but we'll append (2022) so you know that we're talking about the new one. This new MatePad Pro has an 11-inch screen, like its predecessor, and the big upgrade over the 2021 model is in this display, as it uses OLED tech instead of LCD, and has a 120Hz refresh rate. The new tablet also has improved speakers, a redesigned rear camera bump, and software that's designed to be better for multi-tasking. When I was reading the press release on the new Huawei MatePad Pro, I wasn't sure that it was worth reporting on - Huawei hasn't provided a price or release date, or even said whether it'll be available to buy in any … [Read more...] about My iPad Pro would be the best tablet ever if Apple borrowed this Huawei pad feature
Huge DJI Avata leaks still don’t answer my biggest question about the drone
Audio player loading… Thanks to a flurry of new leaks, the incoming DJI Avata drone has now been almost completely unmasked. Yet aside from a few small details, my one big question remains unanswered – who exactly is DJI's mini FPV drone going to be for? The Avata is, it's now pretty clear, a small 'cinewhoop' version of its current DJI FPV drone. A leaked image of the Avata's box from @DealsDrone (opens in new tab) shows it'll promise an "immersive flight experience", thanks to its new DJI Goggles 2 headset, plus "4K stabilized video", a "palm-sized and agile" build, compatibility with a "motion controller" and "HD low-latency transmission". Granted, that does all sound like a lot of fun. But as a leaked video shared by @OsitaLV (opens in new tab) shows, the Avata will still have all the usual restrictions on FPV (first person view) drones – and many of these are similar to the ones that have put the brakes on VR headsets going really mainstream. looks … [Read more...] about Huge DJI Avata leaks still don’t answer my biggest question about the drone
BT and Nokia achieve European first carrier aggregation on 5G SA
Audio player loading… BT has become the first European mobile operator to successfully combine four channels of spectrum (opens in new tab) on a live 5G standalone (SA) network in a development that will help fulfil the speed and capacity promises of next-generation mobile services. Carrier aggregation fuses separate spectrum bands together to harness the advantages of each. For example, marrying the coverage and indoor propagation rates of low-band frequencies with the high capacity and data rates of mid and high band airwaves. In addition to the performance gains, operators can use their existing spectrum assets to reduce the cost of network deployment. 5G SA carrier aggregation Working with Nokia, BT combined EE’s commercial 2.1 GHz, 2.6GHz, 3.4GHz and 3.6GHz frequencies on a radio mast at its Adastral Park research facility in Suffolk. This is the first time four channel components (4CC) have been combined outside a lab setting in Europe. … [Read more...] about BT and Nokia achieve European first carrier aggregation on 5G SA
California law enforcement moves to buy drones, draws controversy
Since Congress passed legislation in February ordering the Federal Aviation Administration to fast-track the approval of unmanned aerial vehicles—more colloquially known as drones—for use by law enforcement agencies, police and sheriff departments across the country have been scrambling to purchase the smaller, unarmed cousins of the Predator and Reaper drones which carry out daily sorties over Afghanistan, Yemen, and other theaters of operation. Alameda County in California has become one of the central battlegrounds over the introduction of drones to domestic police work. Earlier this year , Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern raised the hackles of local civil libertarians (and there are quite a few of those in the county, which encompasses Berkeley and Oakland) by declaring his intention to purchase a drone to assist with “emergency response.” According to Ahern, Alameda Sheriff's personnel first tested a UAV in fall 2011 and gave a public demonstration of the machine's … [Read more...] about California law enforcement moves to buy drones, draws controversy
Serious bug in US Emergency Alert System could be abused to create mass panic
Audio player loading… A bug in the US Emergency Alert System (EAS), a tool used to deliver urgent alerts to the general public, could be abused by threat actors to send out fake alerts, possibly creating mass panic. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently confirmed these findings in an advisory and urged organizations using EAS to tighten up on their security measures, in order to prevent any abuse. As reported by The Register , the flaw was discovered by cybersecurity researcher Ken Pyle, who also managed to successfully exploit it. Apparently, a proof-of-concept is in the works and should be presented to the general public soon. Tightening up security In order to keep their endpoints (opens in new tab) secure, the DHS says, businesses need to update both their hardware and their software to the latest versions, apply security patches (opens in new tab) wherever possible, and set up a firewall as extra means of defense. Furthermore, they … [Read more...] about Serious bug in US Emergency Alert System could be abused to create mass panic

Instagram is about to get photos all wrong (again)
Audio player loading… Instagram's obsession with TikTok has reached crisis levels. It's so bad that it no longer understands its own product. Case in point: a new plan to introduce 9:16 aspect ratio photos as an option (I pray not the default) in your feed. Instagram CEO Adam Moserri revealed the new photo format plan during a recent Ask Me Anything Session (as spotted by The Verge (opens in new tab) ). Mosseri explained that currently, as you are by no doubt painfully aware, you can have vertical videos in your feed (it often seems like we have nothing but these) "but you cannot have tall photos on Instagram. So, we thought maybe we should make sure that we treat both equally.” I already hate all the vertical video Reels in my Instagram feed, not only because they nudge aside virtually all the photos I really want to see, but also because, thanks, to Instagram's dumb design, I can't see the entire video unless I tap on it. At that point, I'm inside an interface that is … [Read more...] about Instagram is about to get photos all wrong (again)
