Final Fantasy XIV could be one of the greatest MMO revival stories in gaming history. Initially released back in 2010 to a very muted response, Square Enix quite literally nuked the game from within when its archaic design choices threatened its reputation. But that didn’t stop it. A bit of management restructuring and a few more years of development time andFinal Fantasy XIV: A Realm Rebornrose from the ashes. Fast-forward to 2019 and we now have Shadowbringers, the game’s third major expansion since its 2013 rebirth. I didn’t stick with the initial launch of Final Fantasy XIV after the beta proved just how problematic it would be, but I’ve been an active player since the 2.0 beta. It’s one of the last subscription-based MMOs on the market, and getting millions of players to commit to that in the face of literally hundreds of free alternatives is enough to say Square Enix has created something special. Smooth-er beginnings Final Fantasy XIV has … [Read more...] about Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers review

Final Fantasy fans were treated to a new trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Remake after listening to orchestral performances of music from the franchise on Sunday, June 9. That trailer closed with the long-awaited reveal of the game’s release date: April 16, 2020. It will launch on PlayStation 4 before that, though, on March 3. The producers of Final Fantasy 7 Remake stated in the past that the game would be released in multiple parts and, in 2016, clarified that Final Fantasy 13, 13-2, and Lightning Returns were being used as the blueprint. The trailer makes no mention of multiple parts and here’s the story synopsis from the latest press release: “Rebuilding and expanding upon the legendary RPG for today, Final Fantasy 7 Remake tells the story of a world fallen under the control of the Shinra Electric Power Company, a shadowy corporation controlling the planet’s very life force as mako energy. In the sprawling city of Midgar, an anti-Shinra organization calling … [Read more...] about Final Fantasy 7 Remake release date set, launches early for PS4
While “RPG” has become a catch-all genre encompassing an almost silly range of games that don’t share much in common, in the ’90s one video game franchise was the quintessential role-playing game. Yes, we’re talking about Final Fantasy from Square, now known as Square Enix. The fantasy Japanese RPGs debuted on the NES in 1987, but became a cultural touchstone in the ’90s on Super Nintendo. From there, the series made an incredibly successful jump to 3D on the original PlayStation. Some are masterpieces. With the remake of the iconic Final Fantasy VII in development, we decided to rank all of the mainline Final Fantasy games. 1. Final Fantasy VI Far and away the best mainline Final Fantasy game, 1994’s Final Fantasy VI is an absolute triumph in every … [Read more...] about Here are the Final Fantasy games, ranked from best to worst
When you look at the world around you and consider what’s popular — the top movies, music, clothing, and products — you get the feeling that everything cool today is something we’ve seen before. Take, for instance, retro video game consoles. When Nintendo unleashed the NES Classic as a standalone, $59 modern version of its beloved console, it sold out almost immediately. The company sold 2.3 million of them in just 5 months, starting in the 2016 holiday season. Hungry for more, Nintendo returned with the SNES Classic Edition last summer. Pre-orders for the system in August 2017 were so rampant that major retailers’ websites crashed under the traffic loads (many, it turns out, were internet bots run by eBay scalpers). As of September 30, 2018, combined sales of the NES and SNES Classic editions have exceeded 10 million units. That’s no drop in the bucket — It approaches the roughly 14 million units the Wii U sold in its entire lifetime. Once a … [Read more...] about From NES to PlayStation, retro gaming is booming.
