So, which one's better at taking photos – a modern DSLR camera, an iPhone 6 Plus, or a Samsung Galaxy Note 4? That's the question we wanted to answer with our recent blind camera comparison, and you might be surprised by the results we're about to share. Long story short, votes are greatly in favor of Samsung's phablet. The Galaxy Note 4 took first place in five out of six scenes, thus solidifying its name as one of the best cameraphones in existence. As for the camera we threw in the race, a Canon EOS 650D, it lagged quite a bit behind the Note 4 and Apple's finest. Now, you're probably wondering how a quality DSLR lost to a couple of smartphone cameras. The answer, in our opinion, has a lot to do with what people perceive as a good-looking image. The iPhone, for example, usually produces colors that are warmer than they actually look – colors are somewhat inaccurate, but very eye-pleasing. In the meantime, the Galaxy Note 4 adds a hint of sharpness to its images, thus … [Read more...] about Galaxy Note 4 dominates our blind camera comparison, beats a Canon DSLR and the iPhone 6 Plus

If you take a quick look at the smartphones that got announced this past week at IFA in Berlin, you'll notice that most of them are large-screened models with displays that usually revolve around the 5.5-inch mark. In other words, most high-end smartphones tend to be phablets. Granted, this is not a new trend in the smartphone industry, but this will do little to alleviate the pain of those of you who prefer their smartphones a bit more compact.Traditionally, compact smartphones are handsets with displays that top out at about 4.6 or 4.7 inches across the diagonal. As with all things, however, at one point or the other, we'll have to redefine what we call compact. That's why we've also included a couple of 5-inch smartphones in this list, which is aimed at those of you that either have small hands or are more worried about the portability issues that phablets entail.Let's get down to the good stuff, and talk about the 5 best smartphones with relatively compact form factors. It … [Read more...] about Relatively compact: the 5 best smartphones that don’t pass the 5-inch mark

The entertainment landscape is evolving at a lightning-quick pace these days, and Netflix is leading the charge. In just a few short years, the innovative company has evolved from growing DVD distributor, to video streaming giant, to bona fide TV studio garnering awards, critical acclaim, and a frenzied fanbase for original series like House of Cards, and Orange is the New Black. More recently Netflix and other streaming services have begun to venture into the deep waters inhabited by only the biggest leviathans of the entertainment world: Movie distribution.Netflix stopped the presses last September by announcing plans to distribute the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon both in IMAX theaters and online — at the same time. The unprecedented move has been followed by smaller acquisitions with similar ambitions, twice prompting theater chains to stage a boycott of the films. But while theaters have treated Netflix’s transition as the latest reason to proclaim … [Read more...] about 5 reasons theaters should stop boycotting Netflix and start working with it
Further solidifying its dominance as the No. 1 mobile operating system, Android secured 53 percent of all ads served to mobile devices during the second quarter, according to the 50th report from Millennial Media, the largest independent ad network.Apple’s iOS came in second with 27 percent share of the market, but the discrepancy between the ads served to the two operating systems is primarily due to the fact that there are simply far more Android phones available than there are iPhones. More than two-thirds of the top 20 devices that made Millennial’s list run Android, compared to only four iPhones (original iPhone, 3G, 3G S and iPhone 4) available. When looking at individual handsets, however, Apple remains king, with 16.2 percent of all ads served to mobile phones going to an iPhone. The iPhone has held strong as the number one ad target since 2009. Coming in second is Research In Motion‘s BlackBerry Curve, with 5.6 percent. The Motorola Droid, Samsung Nexus S and … [Read more...] about Android beats iOS in second quarter ad race, iPhone still top device
Verizon Communications nudged past Wall Street estimates for profit in its third quarter as surging revenue in its wireless business helped offset a surge in expenses.Verizon said revenue rose 26 percent to US$23.25 billion as the company began to reap the benefits of its consolidation efforts, including a boost in sales due to the acquisition of long-distance player MCI. With MCI sales stripped out, sales were up about 4 percent. The company said it would have earned close to $2 billion in the quarter if not for some special one-time costs associated with acquisitions, a new headquarters and a pension settlement. Instead, profit was $1.92 billion, up just slightly from the $1.87 billion earned in the year-ago quarter."Verizon continues to win customers and market share for wireless, broadband and enterprise services," said CEO Ivan Seidenberg. "These organic growth initiatives gained momentum in the third quarter, and we are confident this growth is sustainable."The integration of the … [Read more...] about Verizon Beats Street on Strength in Wireless
