Over the past couple of years, Xiaomi has excelled at making budget Android phones, combining solid specs for decent performance, excellent build quality, and coveted features into reasonably priced devices in its Redmi range that are hard for other brands to match up with. For the first time, it’s launched a ‘Pro’ variant with one of its Redmi handsets. That label gives the Redmi Note 5 Pro an edge over the standard model in the camera department, allowing it to rival the company’s own Android One effort, the Mi A1, rather competently. For the low price of Rs. 14,000 ($215), you get a large narrow-bezel display, Portrait Mode-style shots with both the front and rear cameras, and good performance for a phone in this segment. Here’s how it stacks up against the stiff competition. Design We’ve seen quite a few brands drop the bezels on their mid-range phones over the past year, and Xiaomi’s finally getting in on the act with the Note 5 Pro. Its … [Read more...] about Xiaomi’s $215 Redmi Note 5 Pro offers great value in a bezel-less package

Xiaomi's most talked about phone of the year, the Redmi Note 5 Pro impressed us during our tests. The phone sets a benchmark for upcoming budget phones and has the smarts to compete against more expensive devices. To test this, we pitted the Redmi Note 5 Pro against the OnePlus 5T. While the Snapdragon 835 the 5T ships with, is obviously more powerful than the Snapdragon 636 and comes with enhanced support for camera's up to 32MP or 16MP dual-cams, Xiaomi's camera actually surprised us here. The OnePlus 5T being a considerably more expensive phone, this comparison is a good example of how OEMs are blurring the lines between budget and flagship smartphones.Camera specificationsThe Redmi Note 5 Pro has 12MP and 5MP sensors on the front and back. The 12MP sensor is the primary sensor, whereas the 5MP sensor is a monochrome sensor, used to capture depth. On the other hand, the OnePlus 5T has a 16MP wide-angle primary and a 20MP secondary lens. The OnePlus 5T has f/1.7 aperture, which is … [Read more...] about Camera Comparison: Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro vs OnePlus 5T

Apple is known for its advanced engineering and design. The new iMac Pro is spectacular in that department, somehow packing an insane amount of power into its all-in-one enclosure. But it doesn’t come cheap. If you haven’t looked already, a decked out iMac Pro costs a pretty penny….. lots and lots of pretty pennies. The starting price is a not-exactly-cheap $4,999, but if you’re planning to configure Apple’s all-in-one workstation with all the bells and whistles, things can get pretty crazy. If you include Intel’s massive non-gaming 18-core Xeon W processor when it’s available early next year, you’re looking at more than $13,000. That’s almost the price of a new, compact car.Maybe you want the kind of power that the iMac Pro offers, but aren’t necessarily attached to the idea of getting a Mac. As you can probably assume, you can get way more bang from your buck on the PC side of things. Just how much more? Update: In addition to the new 256GB Extreme Pro CF card, SanDisk today unveiled the Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 (available in 60GB and 120GB capacities), the first card to use the CFast 2.0 spec. SanDisk says it’s the world’s fastest memory card, with read speeds of up to 450MB/second and write speeds of up to 350MB/s – way, way faster than the card mentioned below (SanDisk says a 100GB file takes 4 minutes to transfer at the max theoretical speed). The durable card, which was introduced at the International Broadcasters Convention, is designed for professional broadcast, cinematography, and next-gen pro photography. ARRI, maker of the documentary-style Amira camera, is the first manufacturer to support the card. No pricing was listed, but if SanDisk’s 256GB Extreme Pro costs nearly $2,000, expect this card to cost a lot more.If you shoot HD videos and lots of photos, you know how important it is to get a large-capacity memory card that’s fast and durable. At this point, it’s common knowledge that one of the selling points of going with a Windows-based laptop or desktop PC over a Mac option is price. Windows machines are typically much cheaper than Apple’s offerings. When it comes to the new Mac Pro, however, you might be surprised to learn that building a Windows-based equivalent will deliver an even bigger hit on your banks account, at least when it comes to the most expensive Pro.A top-of-the-line Mac Pro costs $9,599 and includes a 2.7 GHz Intel Xeon E5 12-core processor, 64GB of DDR3 RAM, a 1TB SSD, and dual AMD FirePro D700 graphics cards. In an effort to build a Windows-based equal, Stephen Fung of futurelooks.com chose a Silverstone FT03 case, a Silverstone SST-85F-GS 850W 80 PLUS power supply, an ASUS Rampage IV GENE mATX LGA2011 motherboard, Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 Ivy Bridge-EP 2.7GHz 12-core CPU, and dual AMD FirePro W9000 6GB GDDR5 graphics cards, 32GB of Corsair Vengeance LP DDR3 RAM, and finally, a pair of … [Read more...] about Think a $9,599 Mac Pro is expensive?
