When the subjects of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are raised, many people react with feelings of suspicion and even fear -- will the mass use of robotics technology combined with AI obviate the need for human labour and, if it does, what happens to humans?A study -- called The Augmented Human Enterprise, by Goldsmiths, University of London for robotic process automation company Automation Anywhere -- is more optimistic, stating that organisations augmented by automation technologies are 33 percent more likely to be 'human-friendly' workplaces, in which employees are 31 percent more productive. The research says that augmented organisations achieve 28 percent higher overall performance, have 31 percent better financial performance and are 30 percent more likely to prioritise strategic goals. The report covers multiple industries -- manufacturing, insurance and banking -- and is international, looking at the markets in Japan, India the USA, as well as the UK. And 72 percent … [Read more...] about Could automation and AI be making work more human?

caption Michael Tubbs, the mayor of Stockton, California, which is experimenting with basic income. source Jane Ross/Reuters Most Americans are making less money than they did last year. Economic insecurity is rising. Policy decisions could help bolster economic security as robots and automation are added into the mix. Basic income and a jobs guarantee are two possible solutions. Even with record low unemployment and corporate profits increasing, workers are not feeling the love. Nearly three quarters of American workers aremaking less money this year than last, inflation adjusted median incomes have declined over the last 50 years, and housingprices have skyrocketed. Toss robots and automation into the mix, and it creates a recipe for economic insecurity that raises fundamental questions about the long-term sustainability of pay. Technology will continue to grow unabated, so rather than seeking to dull innovation and reduce long-term growth, new approaches may be … [Read more...] about How a jobs guarantee or basic income could protect Americans from automation and stagnating wages

Fewer jobs are at risk of automation from AI and robotics than previous forecasts have warned, according to a report from the OECD, an inter-governmental group of high-income countries. The new study offers a counterpoint to an influential 2013 paper by Oxford University academics Carl Frey and Michael Osborne, who warned that around 47 percent of jobs in the US were at high risk of being automated. Frey and Osborne’s research set the tone for much of the recent debate over automation, and its message has been reiterated in subsequent studies. But, according to the OECD’s analysis, these current fears are somewhat overblown. The researchers found that only 14 percent of jobs in OECD countries — which includes the US, UK, Canada, and Japan — are “highly automatable,” meaning their probability of automation is 70 percent or higher. This forecast is far less dire than Frey and Osborne’s, althoug it is still significant, equating to around 66 … [Read more...] about AI and robots will destroy fewer jobs than previously feared, says new OECD report
