Aston Martin has worked with Italian design house Zagato for 58 years, and with the latter celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019, the British automaker is building limited-edition cars to commemorate the occasion. Called the DBZ Centenary Collection, the cars consist of the track-only DB4 GT Zagato and the street-legal DBS GT Zagato."The partnership between Aston Martin and Zagato is one of the most fruitful and enduring in the automotive world," Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer said in a statement. "With Zagato celebrating its centenary next year, what better way to celebrate this landmark -- and the long-standing bond between our two great companies -- than creating these 19 pairs of cars."The DB4 GT Zagato draws its inspiration from eponymous racing models of the 1960s. The new car will, as with the original, use a tubular frame with aluminum hand-built bodywork, along with a 380-horsepower straight-six engine, four-speed manual and limited-slip differential. Since its inception, Tesla has mostly ignored the international auto shows the rest of the industry participates in annually. It chooses to make major product announcements at standalone, Apple-style events held at or near its headquarters in California. It’s making a rare exception on September 5 when it travels to Basel, Switzerland, to unveil a surprise. Tesla reserved floor space at an exhibition called Grand Basel that, according to the organizers, “showcases a limited number of carefully-selected, top-of-the-range automobiles.” The list of rare, high-end cars that will hog the spotlight during the multi-day event includes a 1968 Lamborghini Miura, a 1947 Cisitalia 202 SC, a 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, and a 1956 Porsche 550 1500 RS Spyder. Company CEO and co-founder Elon Musk wasn’t even born when the … [Read more...] about What is the high-voltage surprise Tesla will unveil on September 5?
Few cars are quite as legendary as the Aston Martin DB5. It's not because they sold well—just over a thousand were built between 1963 and 1965. And it's not because they won famous races. Instead, the DB5 became such an icon thanks to an early example of product placement, because it's the car that James Bond drove in the film Goldfinger. And now, Aston Martin has said it's going to build 25 of them, complete with gadgets. But they won't be cheap—each will cost $3.51 million (£2.75 million) plus tax. In the film, 007's car was modified by Q Branch and equipped with revolving number plates, machine guns, an oil slick dispenser, and even an ejector seat. In reality, the car used in the film—actually one of Aston Martin's pre-production prototypes—was modified by John Stears, who won an Oscar for his work. No one knew at the time quite how much the DB5 would steal the show, and after the film the gadgets were removed from the car, then reinstalled some years … [Read more...] about Aston Martin will build 25 new Goldfinger cars—with gadgets
