The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) said it was in contact with Tesla about a tweet Chief Executive Elon Musk wrote about a driver monitoring function. A Dec. 31 tweet suggested drivers with more than 10,000 miles using Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" ( FSD ) software system should be able to disable the "steering wheel nag," an alert that instructs drivers to hold the wheel to confirm they are paying attention. Musk responded: "Agreed, update coming in Jan." NHTSA Monday said it "is in contact with Tesla to gather additional information." The Associated Press reported NHTSA's statement earlier. Tesla did not immediately comment. The auto safety agency confirmed the questions about Musk's tweet are in connection with its ongoing defect probe into 830,000 Tesla vehicles with driver assistance system Autopilot and involving crashes with parked emergency vehicles. faa: SpaceX project clears US FAA environmental review
WASHINGTON: The Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA ) approved a final environmental assessment of the proposed SpaceX Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket program in Boca Chica, Texas after requiring more than 75 conditions. The FAA published a finding of "No Significant Impact" but is placing some limitations on launches and requiring steps to limit environmental impacts, the agency said, clearing a hurdle for the program. "One step closer to the first orbital flight test of Starship," SpaceX tweeted soon after the decision. The FAA noted completing the environmental review does not guarantee issuance of a vehicle operator license, which is contingent upon meeting FAA requirements for safety, risk, and financial responsibility. The FAA said as a result of the requirements, there will be more advanced notice of launches to reduce a highway closure during launch operations. Launches will not be allowed on 18 identified holidays, and are … [Read more...] about faa: SpaceX project clears US FAA environmental review
Feds Will Review Tesla ‘Sudden Unintended Acceleration’ Complaints
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced plans to review a petition requesting that the administration investigate 500,000 Tesla vehicles over reports of sudden unintended acceleration, in which vehicles suddenly accelerate without human control — complainants often report their foot wasn’t even on the gas pedal when incidents occur. Reuters reports that the NHTSA announced on Friday that it would review a petition asking the administration to investigate 500,000 Tesla vehicles over reports that the cars can suddenly accelerate randomly. The petition requests the review of the 2012 through 2019 model year Tesla Model S, 2016 through 2019 Tesla Model X, and 2018 through 2019 Tesla Model 3 vehicles. The petition requests the investigation of “127 consumer complaints to NHTSA involving 123 unique vehicles. The reports include 110 crashes and 52 injuries.” Some reports claim that their Tesla vehicle suddenly and unintentionally accelerates when … [Read more...] about Feds Will Review Tesla ‘Sudden Unintended Acceleration’ Complaints
Musk oversaw staged Tesla self-driving video, emails show
If there was any doubt that Tesla CEO Elon Musk knew the company's much-watched 2016 self-driving demo was staged, emails obtained by Bloomberg should lay that to rest. "Just want to be absolutely clear that everyone’s top priority is achieving an amazing Autopilot demo drive," Musk wrote in an email. "Since this is a demo, it is fine to hardcode some of it, since we will backfill with production code later in an OTA update." Musk saw little wrong with this strategy, saying, "I will be telling the world that this is what the car *will* be able to do, not that it can do this upon receipt," he wrote. But instead of making this clear, the video, released to the world via Musk's Twitter account , opens instead with white text on a black background telling the viewer that "the person in the driver's seat is only there for legal reasons. He is not doing anything. The car is driving itself." Musk took to Twitter on the day of the video's release to tell his followers that the car … [Read more...] about Musk oversaw staged Tesla self-driving video, emails show

The federal investment tax credit will now give you 30% of the cost of your solar system back on your taxes, and local incentives ( like net metering ) are still strong, though there are some efforts to roll them back. Climate change is expected to make the grid less reliable and increase the likelihood of extreme weather events. Meta will allow Donald Trump back on Facebook, sparking wave of criticism
Meta will restore Donald Trump's access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts "in the coming weeks" but "with new guardrails in place" to prevent real-world harm, the company said in a blog post yesterday. Facebook suspended Trump "following his praise for people engaged in violence at the Capitol on January 6, 2021," Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg noted in the blog post. "We then referred that decision to the Oversight Board—an expert body established to be an independent check and balance on our decision-making. The Board upheld the decision but criticized the open-ended nature of the suspension and the lack of clear criteria for when and whether suspended accounts will be restored, directing us to review the matter to determine a more proportionate response." After the board review, Facebook decided to make Trump's suspension last until at least January 7, 2023. "Now that the time period of the suspension has elapsed, the question is not whether we choose … [Read more...] about Meta will allow Donald Trump back on Facebook, sparking wave of criticism
SpaceX scrubs launch attempt, may try again Friday [Updated]
Final update : Out of an "abundance of caution" SpaceX postponed its launch attempt Thursday evening. The company's founder, Elon Musk, tweeted that, "There was a tiny glitch in the motion of an upper stage engine actuator. Probably not a flight risk, but still worth investigating." The rocket will now launch no earlier than Friday evening, when the launch window opens again at 5:40pm ET. However the weather, with a tropical system developing off the coast, may become a bit of a concern. Update : SpaceX says its launch team is still "finalizing review of vehicle data and check outs," so the Falcon 9 will not launch tonight at the opening of the launch window, at 5:40pm ET. A new launch time has been set for 7:36pm ET, just four minutes before the launch window closes. The webcast below is not expected to begin until about 20 minutes before the rocket actually launches. India Declares War on BBC Narendra Modi Documentary
The government of India is extremely unhappy with a BBC documentary critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi – so unhappy that the government cut power to a university attempting to screen the film and ordered social media giants Twitter and YouTube to block attempts to share it. Both Twitter and YouTube complied with these censorship requests. The documentary is called India: The Modi Question . The BBC felt Modi deserved careful scrutiny because India is “seen by the west as an important bulwark against Chinese domination of Asia.” The first installment of the planned two-part series covered Modi’s rise in Indian politics, including his ties to various Hindu nationalist organizations, and his controversial tenure as chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat. Gujarat was the scene of violence between Muslims and Hindus in the early 2000s, culminating in the murder of 60 Hindu pilgrims when their train was set on fire. The majority Hindus … [Read more...] about India Declares War on BBC Narendra Modi Documentary
Facebook, Instagram to Lift Trump’s Suspension
Facebook parent company Meta said Wednesday that it will allow former US President Donald Trump to return to the social media platform in the coming weeks. The controversial move gives Trump, who announced last year that he's running for president in 2024, another online megaphone. Facebook, Instagram and other social networks booted Trump from their platforms after the deadly US Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, because of fears his remarks could incite further violence. Meta owns Facebook and Instagram. An oversight board tasked with reviewing Meta's content decisions then upheld the move but said it wasn't "appropriate" for Facebook to impose an "indefinite" suspension. The social media giant said Trump would remain suspended for two years until at least Jan. 7, 2023. To make a decision about Trump's account, Facebook worked with experts to determine if the threats to public safety had decreased. "Our determination is that the risk has sufficiently receded, and that we … [Read more...] about Facebook, Instagram to Lift Trump’s Suspension
