Microsoft’s OneDrive Files On-Demand brings better sync options to Windows 10
Microsoft ditched its use of placeholder files in Windows 10 in favor of selective file and folder syncing, and Windows users weren’t happy. After more than two years on from that decision , Microsoft is announcing OneDrive Files On-Demand today. The new on-demand feature lets OneDrive pick out data from the cloud when it’s needed, without having to sync full files and folders to a device. It’s similar to Microsoft’s placeholder files, but it's not exactly the same. OneDrive Files On-Demand will only download files when you need them. Microsoft is implementing new status icons in File Explorer that show if files are available locally or if they'll need to be downloaded from the cloud. If you've opened a file online then it will be synced and available offline, but otherwise you'll still need to select entire folders for syncing offline or individual files. Any files you open will be automatically synced offline until you run out of disk space. Microsoft is delivering this new … [Read more...] about Microsoft’s OneDrive Files On-Demand brings better sync options to Windows 10
It’s China meets East Texas, as Huawei files patent lawsuit against T-Mobile
The Eastern District of Texas was once just a place where American companies went to get fast justice when they wanted to sue a foreign competitor over patents. But US intellectual property laws cuts both ways. An expanding set of lawsuits between Huawei and its competitors is the clearest sign yet that Chinese companies are quickly learning to use IP law to gain an edge over their competitors. Shenzhen-based Huawei sued (PDF) T-Mobile last week, asking for a judicial ruling that it's following the right rules for using "standard essential" patents, which require patents to be licensed on a "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory" (or "FRAND") basis. The new lawsuit is a kind of follow-on lawsuit for four patent infringement lawsuits that Huawei filed against T-Mobile in January, all based in the Eastern District of Texas. (Here's one complaint (PDF) from the four January cases.) Huawei and T-Mobile have been in legal conflict since 2014, when T-Mobile alleged that Huawei … [Read more...] about It’s China meets East Texas, as Huawei files patent lawsuit against T-Mobile
Hands-on: Four Mac apps to transfer voicemail, other files from your iPhone
"How can I transfer voicemail files from my iPhone to my computer?" It's a question I'm asked fairly often by Ars readers through e-mail, Facebook, or Twitter—at least two or three times every month. It's also a question I was forced to ask myself recently. I had a number of voicemails on my iPhone that needed to be transferred off and forwarded to the appropriate legal entities. And, equally frustrating, I had older, less-tech-savvy family members facing this problem. It's not as if I could tell them to jailbreak their devices and dig through filesystems. But as many of my Twitter followers pointed out, there are plenty of software packages that allow users to easily transfer their voicemail files—as well as text messages, photos, music, and other data—from an iOS device to a computer. No jailbreak hanky panky required. I took a look at the four most popular applications that were recommended to me. One is Mac-only, and three are available for both OS X and … [Read more...] about Hands-on: Four Mac apps to transfer voicemail, other files from your iPhone
