Buying an iPhone at the Apple Store isn't quite as simple as walking into a clothing store and buying a pair of jeans. If you come prepared, the process will go a lot more smoothly. Having been an Apple Store specialist myself, I can help you get in and out of the Apple Store with your brand new iPhone in hand more efficiently. Do some research first Do a little bit of research before you go in. Have some idea about which iPhone you might like. The specialist in the store can answer questions and help you decide on a model, but having some idea before you go will keep you from feeling overwhelmed by choices. Plus, it's always a good idea to go in when you are relaxed and not rushing off to an appointment. Decide if you want a SIM-free iPhone Do you need or want a SIM-free iPhone? In other words, an unlocked, international phone that will work in any country and with any cellular company's SIM card in it? If so, you'll want to ask for the SIM-free phone up front. If you use a cellular … [Read more...] about What you need to know before buying an iPhone at the Apple Store

Hands-On By Lester Victor Marks Tuesday, March 27, 2018, 11:42 am PT (02:42 pm ET) As part of Apple's new education initiative, Apple has refreshed a new e-learning tool for teachers to quickly get up to speed with what Apple offers, and AppleInsider has delved into it a bit. With all of the things announced this morning, a valid question is, how is a teacher supposed to learn to use any of this in the classroom? Isn't teaching hard enough without adapting curricula around these devices? Apple Teacher helps alleviate that with some very approachable training. Signing up for Apple Teacher requires an Apple ID, and asks which grade is being taught, which subject, and where. The school name appears to be optional at this time, but city and state are required. Once inside Apple Teacher, a welcome screen gives an overview of the portal. Teachers select the iPad or Mac, with eight quizzes for each device. Pass all eight quizzes, and the teacher officially becomes an "Apple Teacher," is … [Read more...] about Hands on: a walkthrough of the educator-centric Apple Teacher portal
After a brief, and largely unsuccessful effort to pull JC Penney out of the dumps , Apple 's ex-boss of retail Ron Johnson has been shown the door, it seems. The discount clothing retailer saw its revenue slump 27% under Ron, despite the stellar performance he achieved with the Apple Store chain, for which they hired him. It turns out that even one of the best retail specialists can't help when you have more than a thousand stores across the US in increasingly unattractive locations, and the product you are selling is not exactly flying off the shelves like Apple gear does. Mr Johnson wanted a "challenge" when he moved, and tried to make JC Penney more upscale, rebranding the locations into "Shops" with a more boutique feel, but it turned out to be a slow and painful process. Word on the street is that Ron Johnson might make a swing at Apple again, as now the retail shops of the electronics giant are directly run by Tim Cook himself, who probably has much more on his head with the … [Read more...] about Apple’s ex-retail boss Ron Johnson out from JC Penney, back to the mothership?
In the beginning, Google was a search company. Period. At some point, it shifted into being a software and services company — and then a software and services company that, y'know, kinda-sorta dabbled in hardware here and there. These days, there's no denying it: In addition to its ongoing software and services efforts, Google is a hardware company through and through. Google has made that crystal clear with the launch of eight physical products and the accompanying shift toward emphasizing Google — not Android — as the primary ecosystem for its users. Sure, the hardware is designed specifically to showcase Google software and services, but the devices themselves are rapidly becoming an integral part of the equation. Now, as the company works to raise availability and awareness of its hardware products, it's hard not to wonder how long it'll be before the first permanent standalone Google retail store shows up in the wild.Crazy? Maybe. But the notion isn't quite as … [Read more...] about How long til the true Google retail store arrives?
Apple has hired a former fashion powerhouse Yves Saint Laurent CEO, Paul Deneve, as a vice president for special projects reporting directly to Tim Cook. Needless to say, Mr Deneve has experience placing products as premium with the necessary price markup, and that's maybe why he landed at Cupertino.Apple had some issues with the management of the retail business after its chief left for JC Penney, and it hired a UK retail specialist, who was promptly fired, and the retail branch is now under direct Tim Cook management. He might be willing to offload this to someone like Paul Deneve, but the rumor is he wasn't hired for retail.Speculation mounts for the launch of an iWatch wearable device, which would be right in the ballpark of Mr Deneve as former YSL CEO, since the watch will be as much of a fashion statement as it will be a nifty gadget to communicate with the iDevice in your pocket or purse, so we are all ears what will come out of this. … [Read more...] about Apple hires the CEO of fashion powerhouse Yves Saint Laurent, will report directly to Tim Cook
