Back in September, Intel announced the Intel Reference Design for Android (IRDA). This would allow manufacturers to have a list of supported hardware that would guarantee Android updates no later than two weeks after Google makes these updates available for up to two years. German company TrekStor says it will join this initiative with the Xintron I 7.0.The Xintron I 7.0 is the first tablet to attempt this feat. It’s nothing special, either. We’re looking at a decidedly mid-range tablet, with its Intel Atom Z375G Bay Trail processor and 1GB of RAM. As the name implies, the Xintron is equipped with a 7-inch 1280 x 800 display. It has a 1.26-megapixel front camera and a 5-megapixel camera on the back. While the Xintron only comes with 8GB of storage, it does have a MicroSD card slot to help you pack in a few extra gigabytes if needed (and you will need the space). It also has a standard array of radios, such as 802.11n Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth 4.0.The first … [Read more...] about This tablet, by TrekStor, promises to deliver new Android updates within 2 weeks
Twitter is out with a new look for its Android app — one that follows Google’s Material Design guidelines for Android apps. What’s Material Design? It’s a design language that Google unveiled when it launched Android 5.0 Lollipop. Google has pushed the design to almost all of its apps, and many other developers have followed suit with their own apps as well. Some of its notable features include a floating action button, a slide-out navigation menu, and tabs you can scroll through. All of that is available in the newest Twitter for Android update. The design still maintains the white-and-blue theme that Twitter is recognizable for, but now you can easily slide between your notifications, timeline, Direct Messages, and more. The floating action button sits on the bottom right of the app, allowing people to compose a tweet instantly.Sliding out the navigation drawer brings you quick access to your profile, Highlights, Lists, the Connect tab, and of course, your … [Read more...] about Twitter gets materialized in latest Android update
WhatsApp has answered the call of the smiley by adding a ton of new emojis to its messaging app as part of its latest Android update, reports Android Headlines. Heretofore disgruntled Android users will be happy to learn that they, too, can now take part in all the cool little yellow icons their WhatsApp iOS counterparts already have access to.The Android update (2.12.372) is available now and comes with a host of weird and wonderful emojis, among them rolling eyes, unicorns, a popped champagne bottle (for when you want to get your inner hip-hop impresario on), a taco (because a taco is for life, not just for Taco Tuesday), and a popcorn box. Also notable are the new tabs, which categorize emojis into sections that include food, sports, and activities. In fact, the abundance of emoji tabs at the top means the display looks a tad cluttered, but we doubt anyone will be complaining. The practicality of the WhatsApp update requires that the person you are messaging to also have it … [Read more...] about Pick a smiley face, WhatsApp Android update packs huge new set of emojis
iOS Instagram users have been merrily straightening their images for a couple of months now, leaving their Android counterparts to make do with crooked shots or having to delete and start over. The good news is, the straightening tool has just come to Instagram for Android, along with a few other features.Straighten is a neat, simple-to-use tool that should mean you’ll never again have to post a tilted picture to your favorite media-sharing service. If you notice your image is a little off balance, just tap the new straighten button and watch as Instagram brings it into line. A slider at the bottom of the screen lets you fine tune the tilt should you feel Instagram’s algorithms to be a little wayward in dealing with your masterpiece. When the Facebook-owned company rolled out the feature for iDevice owners in August, Instagram developer Alex Restrepo revealed that a straightening tool had been in the works for a long time. However, its early effort – a manual-only … [Read more...] about Instagram for Android update adds photo straightening while quietly preparing for ads
Things continue to look bleak for Samsung Android customers. Last week, a T-Mobile insider accused the manufacturer of purposefully putting off the Android 2.2 update until the Vibrant Plus is introduced. And despite protests from Samsung, it’s difficult to dismiss the fact that only one of its Android phones was privileged enough for the latest Froyo OS.Now we’re hearing that a standoff between Samsung and its carriers could be what’s between users and an updated Android OS. An anonymous source wrote into XDA Developers, claiming that Samsung requires carriers to pay a fee each time its smartphones are eligible for an Android upgrade, and carriers have simply refused. It almost seems like enough of a headache to switch to an iOS device. Apple simply requires its users to plug in their phones and open iTunes; Android devices rely on carriers for its OS upgrades. These overhaul “feature” upgrades aren’t cheap, and thus Samsung passes the buck to its … [Read more...] about Is a deadlock between Samsung and carriers stagnating Android updates?
