Watch Desktop Linux Apps (like GIMP) Running on Chrome OS [Video]
Chromebooks can run Linux apps now Linux fans enthusiastic about Google’s effort to bring desktop Linux apps on Chrome OS owe to themselves to watch the following video. In it, technology YouTuber Lon Seidman demos the current state of the Crostini project (‘Crostini’ is the codename for the “run desktop and CLI Linux apps on Chrome OS” feature we keep gushing about) on both an Intel Chromebox and an ARM-based Chromebook. This latter demo, of ARM support, is of particular interest. Kenneth Christiansen (a contributor to Chromium) has shared some screenshots of how the work is progressing, and it looks fantastic. For those unaware, Chrome OS has an 'Add to Shelf' menu option, which allows users to add websites to the operating system's app library. Sites would have their … [Read more...] about [Update: Coming in v67] Google is improving Progressive Web Apps on Chrome OS
OpenShift, IBM Cloud, Azure, Linux apps on Chrome OS, Twitter, Serious Flaw on AMD and Intel x86 CPUs
Red Hat has been making headlines with the recent announcement that they will be teaming up with IBM to integrate OpenShift (Red Hat’s commercial Kubernetes offering) into IBM’s Cloud (https://www.redhat.com/en/about/press-releases/ibm-and-red-hat-join-forces-accelerate-hybrid-cloud-adoption) to help accelerate container adoption. At the same time, Red Hat expanded beyond IBM and is now also working with Microsoft to provide the same OpenShift platform to Azure (https://www.zdnet.com/article/red-hat-and-microsoft-bring-openshift-to-azure/). It is now official, Google announced during the Google I/O summit that Project Crostini is making it possible for users to install Linux applications on Chrome OS (https://www.zdnet.com/article/linux-comes-to-chromebooks) via DEB files (from Debian Stretch). This is on top of the already integrated support for Android apps. A serious flaw was recently discovered affecting all major operating systems running on AMD and Intel x86 CPUs. The … [Read more...] about OpenShift, IBM Cloud, Azure, Linux apps on Chrome OS, Twitter, Serious Flaw on AMD and Intel x86 CPUs
