In brief: Not to make anyone feel old or anything, but the iPod turned 20 over the weekend. Apple's portable MP3 player first launched on October 23, 2001. To celebrate the iPod's birthday, Playdate maker Panic posted what it says are images of "an original early iPod prototype." Panic said it doesn't know where the prototype came from and did not elaborate on how it obtained the old device. However, iPod's inventor Tony Fadell confirmed that it was indeed an iPod prototype referred to as a P68/Dulcimer. This is a P68/Dulcimer iPod prototype we (very quickly) made before the true form factor design was ready. Didn’t want it look like an iPod for confidentiality - the buttons placement, the size - it was mostly air inside - and the wheel worked (poorly) https://t.co/qeNMHMmVsc — Tony Fadell (@tfadell) October 23, 2021 The device is large, clunky, and appears to still be in working order, although it admittedly doesn't work all that well. But how high are your expectations … [Read more...] about Apple designed this prototype of the first iPod to keep the form factor from leaking

Jeff Bezos’ spaceflight venture Blue Origin announced plans to build its own free-flying space station today. Called Orbital Reef, the future space station will begin operating in the second half of this decade, according to Blue Origin, providing a place for researchers, industrial and commercial customers, and international partners to visit and work. Blue Origin is working on the Orbital Reef project in partnership with spaceflight company Sierra Space, a subsidiary of the Sierra Nevada Corporation. Sierra Space’s most well-known project is the Dream Chaser, a winged spaceplane designed to carry cargo — and perhaps people one day — to the International Space Station. Dream Chaser is scheduled to begin cargo flights in 2022. Blue Origin says that Orbital Reef also has the backing of additional spaceflight teammates, including industry heavyweight Boeing, as well as Redwire Space, Genesis Engineering Solutions, and Arizona State University. With an internal volume nearly as … [Read more...] about Blue Origin reveals plans for future commercial space station called Orbital Reef
No offense to the remaining games on 2021's release calendar, but the thing I'm most excited about playing on Christmas Day this year is Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Rockstar Games' Definitive Edition will offer quality-of-life improvements to all three of GTA's PS2 entries, including better aiming and reworked visuals, while retaining the original essence of GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas. The art style is drawing some mixed responses, and I think they've got Tommy Vercetti's hair all wrong, but generally my first reaction is positive. So, what is the essence of those PS2 games? Well, to be brutal, the first three 3D GTA entries were devoid of checkpoints, rife with difficulty spikes and weighed down by stiff driving and shooting controls, even for the time. To pick up and play now, they're a bumpy ride for anyone used to playing the far more comfortable GTA 5, which has better shooting, driving and pretty much everything else. That's why the Definitive Edition upgrade is so … [Read more...] about Why the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition matters, even if the games are old as hell

As a fan of HBO's phenomenal Chernobyl miniseries , I was rather giddy about the opportunity to speak with Jared Harris. The London-born actor with a long resume, including stage performances and films and television shows like Mad Men and The Crown , gives an amazing performance as Valery Legasov, a real-life (and now deceased) scientist drafted by the Soviet government to control the harrowing effects of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor explosion and to find out what went wrong. At Sunday's Golden Globes , Chernobyl is up for best television limited series or motion picture made for television. And Harris is nominated for best performance by an actor in a limited series or a motion picture made for television for playing a man thrust into a grievous situation where each day brings terrible news. He has a near-impossible job, even without the bureaucratic stonewalling he encounters at every turn, the aggressive KGB minders following him and a decaying Soviet regime … [Read more...] about Golden Globe nominee Jared Harris on filming Chernobyl: ‘I enjoy the fear’
Domestic sitcom and gritty drama make for a strange marriage of convenience in Kevin Can F**k Himself , the AMC series starring Annie Murphy of Schitt's Creek that's beguiled and baffled viewers this summer. The final episode of season 1 is streaming now on AMC Plus (airing Aug. 1 on AMC) but this inventive split-com stumbles at the last. The show is a bold and bizarre two-fer. Some scenes are shot in the familiar manner of '90s sitcoms: Punishingly well-lit, multicamera, a doofy husband making doofy jokes at his unrealistically hot wife's expense -- and being rewarded with a riotous laugh track. But then it transitions into something else entirely as other scenes are shot more like a Breaking Bad-style modern drama, with a gray-brown palette that connotes realism , a soundscape building suspense without ever releasing tension and even a made-for-prestige-television drug subplot.
