Each year, Nvidia sifts through hundreds of startups that use its graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate non-graphics applications, such as artificial intelligence or pattern recognition. And it comes up with a handful that are worth investment or attention via its Inception program. I’ve been to Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference every year, but I won’t be able to make it to next week’s event because it overlaps with the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. But I did have a chance to collect some info on the startups in Nvidia’s Inception, a virtual accelerator program that helps GPU-based startups get to market faster. Through the program, Nvidia provides GPU discounts, technical guidance, and business networking opportunities at places such as the Inception Showcase at GTC. This year’s batch includes: Shone Above: Shone is automating cargo ships.Image Credit: Shone Based in San Francisco, Shone is bringing autonomous cargo ships to … [Read more...] about 8 GPU-powered startups on display at Nvidia’s GTC event

Much of my work over the past decade has centered on the notion of building a platform in one way or another. It could be through architecting a major business service to meet a new regulatory need, defining, implementing, and managing partner integrations, participating in standards and data governance bodies, or exploring business partnerships to design a shared platform. I always loved connecting and exposing various parts of the organization, especially by means of external collaboration—turning our intra-industry enterprises into inter-industry ecosystems.Given the trendiness around all-things platform, I’m obsessed with following this very buzzy word. Through research and discussing this topic with others, I’ve distilled various thoughts into three groups (along with very broad generalizations for each):1. Platform as omnichannel experience“Mainstream” business-oriented thinkingWe all see and experience game-changing technologies on … [Read more...] about PaaS, part one: The BLT
If you had visited the Cambridge University Library in the late 1990s, you might have observed a skinny young man, his face illuminated by the glow of a laptop screen, camping out in the stacks. William Tunstall-Pedoe had wrapped up his studies in computer science several years earlier, but he still relished the musty aroma of old paper, the feeling of books pressing in from every side. The library received a copy of nearly everything published in the United Kingdom, and the sheer volume of information—5 million books and 1.2 million periodicals—inspired him. It was around this time, of course, that another vast repository of knowledge—the internet—was taking shape. Google, with its famous mission statement “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” was proudly stepping into its role as librarian to the planet. But as much as Tunstall-Pedoe adored lingering in the stacks, he felt that … [Read more...] about Amazon Alexa and the Search for the One Perfect Answer
By the end of this year, it’s predicted that Deep Learning will be a core component in the tool-kit of 80 per cent of data scientists. That’s a pretty big jump considering machine learning and AI are still considered to be cutting edge technologies and Deep Learning goes even further than both.Deep Learning is used by some of the world’s largest brands such as Google that cites it as the cornerstone of its voice image recognition algorithms. Netflix uses it to work out what you want to watch next, Amazon for what you’ll buy next, and even researchers at MIT use to predict the future. There are a growing number of tech vendors entering the space who are keen to discuss how this is the next generation of data science, but what exactly is it? And is it more than just another name for AI?What even is deep learning?Deep Learning, Machine Learning and AI are inexorably tied together. Machine Learning is cutting edge tech – it’s the field of AI which … [Read more...] about Deep learning – The next big thing in data analytics… and you probably haven’t heard of it!
