Getting personal, Calling, Pricing, and the Overall WinnerGetting personalBoth the Echo and Home let you set up different household profiles so you can switch between users, which is very useful if you and your loved ones have different tastes in music. But the Home has the advantage, because it can differentiate users based on voice. This means that if you ask for your daily schedule, the speaker’s answer will be different than if your partner asks. However, Alexa actually bests the Home in terms of calendars, because it supports all G Suite calendars, while Google’s speaker still only supports your personal one. This means your work events won’t show up, unless you share them to your personal calendar. That’s a small victory, though, as you have to ask Alexa to switch profiles, instead of letting it detect who you are. In terms of language support, both devices support American and British English, though Alexa can also recognize … [Read more...] about Is there an Echo in here? A man in Melbourne, Australia, won a defamation case against Google over the search engine's image results.According to The Age, the plaintiff, Michael Trkulja, contacted Google in 2009 requesting that the site remove images linking him to former meth kingpin Tony Mokbel.Google used the innocent dissemination defense, arguing that it hadn't published the materials in question and was simply indexing information found elsewhere. The court wouldn't have it, though, asserting that Google was still liable for the image results because it failed to take steps to remove the content, even after being specifically asked to do so.Trkulja also charged that Google search results linked him to Melbourne Crime, a now-defunct site. However, according The Age, the jury absolved Google from the search results aspect of the case because Trkulja had incorrectly filled out a form about the content to which he objected.Trkulja filed and won a similar case against Yahoo earlier this year, netting him about … [Read more...] about TECH TREK Aussie Man, Wrongly Linked to Criminal, Wins Case vs. Google

Three American companies – including two Internet giants – have been accused of deliberately hiding profits from their British operations in an attempt to avoid paying taxes by a committee made up of UK Ministers of Parliament, bringing into relief long-term discussions over closing possible tax loopholes that may have made the United Kingdom and Ireland such attractive locations for companies to decamp to in the first place.Appearing before the committee, Matt Brittin, Google’s head of Northern Europe, said that the company operates its international operations from Ireland because of the low corporate tax rate available there (12.5 percent). The company’s filings show that it had £2.5 billion worth of sales in the United Kingdom last year, but despite having a profit margin of 33 percent, managed to pay only £3.4 million in taxes. That’s because it diverts non-US sales through the Irish headquarters, which asks for just 3.2 percent in taxes on … [Read more...] about Amazon and Google accused of hiding profits from UK authorities
User interface and features Amazon Cloud Drive As one would expect, both the Amazon and Google interfaces take inspiration from the basic iTunes design. Amazon’s design seems to be a mix of that basic template and the one that Pandora uses. We have nothing bad to say about the interface, other than it looks a bit dated and isn’t as sleek as some other options. As far as features go, Amazon has the benefit of being the service that’s been around the longest and is open to the public. Besides the basic features of cloud storage and streaming via web or an Android device, Amazon has taken the approach of giving loyal Amazon users extra benefits. For instance, you get 5GB of free storage, but if you buy an MP3 album from the Amazon MP3 store, you get bumped up to 20GB of free storage for a year. Other purchases from the Amazon store are also stored in the cloud for free. If you never buy music from Amazon, you might be getting the short end of the stick with this … [Read more...] about Apple iCloud vs. Google Music vs. Amazon Cloud

While Apple TV has kicked around in various iterations since 2007 and Google TV hasn’t even hit the market officially, enquiring TV addicts want to know: Which will you be kicking back and watching this fall? In truth, despite the similar names and cutthroat competitors, they’re two different beasts entirely. Here’s how Google TV is different from Apple TV.Google and Apple have both carried their smartphone strategies directly over to the television: Apple won’t let anybody else touch its proprietary Apple TV interface, and Google wants to staple Google TV onto as many boxes as it can. Google TV will be built right in to new TVs from Sony, available on separate set-top boxes from Logitech, and those are just launch partners, with many more to come. Just as it does with smartphones, this rainbow of vendors will translate to more choice for Google TV users, while Apple TV users have one box to do it all. Need composite video outputs, 1080p decoding or some other, … [Read more...] about Apple TV vs. Google TV: How do they differ?

Google and Microsoft are positioned against each other as primary competitors, and that could mean trouble. I remember past dynamics similar to theirs that didn't end well for either company. Apple focused on IBM (the 1984 ad) and didn't see Microsoft coming. Microsoft focused on AOL and didn't see the Internet coming. Intel focused on AMD so much it missed both Transmeta and ARM. Microsoft and Apple focused on each other, and both were blindsided by Google. Now Microsoft and Google are focusing on each other, which likely will lead both to ignore the risk that Amazon represents, until it's too late. This is just one part of a dynamic that seems to repeat itself over and over again, though. Another is the willingness to take risks. Google can't seem to find a risk it isn't willing to take (with little success but little overall damage), whereas Microsoft these days is defined as a company that is unwilling to take risks, with little in the way of breakout successes.Google still lives … [Read more...] about OPINION Microsoft vs. Google: Chasing Butts While Running From Risks
This last week I spent some quality time at HP, and I'm frankly amazed at what the PC team has been able to accomplish in terms of overcoming what I've termed the "Big Company Disease."However, as I watched them struggle to create the best user experience on the planet, one that exceeded what Apple currently provides, I constantly saw Microsoft as their biggest problem. Speaking of Apple, Amazon reported stunning earnings for last quarter, and Steve Jobs' negative comments on the Kindle suggests that an Apple e-Book is likely coming soon. Amazon is likely to put up a fight. Finally, tomorrow a lot of you will be voting and, as I mentioned last week, it is in all of our best interests if you vote smart this time, as you could truly make a difference. I'm going to argue that you not only get out and vote, you get out and vote smart and help make the world a better place. As we do every week, I'm going to point you to my product of the week, a new Gateway system that bridges the HD DVD and … [Read more...] about OPINION HP’s Biggest Obstacle Is Microsoft, Amazon vs. Apple, Voting Smart
