Most people can’t make it through a meal without checking their mobile phones, new research from YouGov has found. According to a survey of more than 2,000 people 55 per cent said they checked their phone during dinner, while 53 per cent said they look at their phone even when dining out with friends or family. Such is our addiction to our mobile devices that more than half (54 per cent) said they could not go more than two days without their phone before it bothered them, and one in five said they couldn’t cope being without their phone for four hours. Eton College is facing a backlash from teachers after banning students from using mobile phones in the classroom. Simon Henderson, headmaster at the £40,000-a-year school, wrote to parents at the start of the academic year to announce the ban, which he said would be introduced as a trial. Joe Francis, an English teacher at Eton College, said the experimental ban caused some consternation among masters who see mobile phones as a useful teaching aid. “There are some teachers who are absolutely spitting about it,” Mr Francis told The Daily Telegraph. “They tend to be the more techy teachers, maths and science people who think it is a bit Luddite and anti-progress. “There will be people, older people particularly and humanities teachers, who applaud it. I sympathise with [them] … [Read more...] about Eton faces backlash after banning mobile phones in the classroom
PARIS (Reuters) - A French researcher has invented a robot finger that attaches to your mobile phone. It can wriggle across your desk. It can stroke your hand. And guess what? It’s creepy. No, really, watch the video. Creepy, see? He wants to know why. “My PhD subject is around touch in communications,” explains Marc Teyssier, a researcher at Telecom Paristech engineering school. “When we talk with people in real life we touch each other to communicate emotions, for example a stroke on the arm, or stuff like that. But for mobile devices and interaction in general in computers, we don’t use touch at all. So my starting point was: how can we bring touch in human-computer interfaces?” So he designed, built and patented the MobiLimb robotic finger, which plugs into a mobile phone and looks very much like a real finger. It can drag the phone across the table. Your friends can activate it and operate it remotely, to give you a comforting pat on the … [Read more...] about A wagging finger sticking out of your mobile phone is creepy. Why?
