What just happened? Bill Gates and Elon Musk are two of the wealthiest people in the world, but they certainly don't see eye to eye. The pair have had public spats in the past, and now the former Microsoft boss has taken a shot at Musk's ambitions for sending missions to and colonizing Mars, saying he would rather pay for vaccines than travel to the red planet. In an interview with the BBC , Gates was asked by journalist Amol Rajan if going to Mars is not a good use of money. "It's actually quite expensive to go to Mars. You can buy measles vaccines and save lives for $1,000 per life saved," he replied. "And so [that] just kind of grounds you, as in - don't go to Mars." Gates' reply seems aimed chiefly at Elon Musk, whom he's clashed with in the past, though fellow billionaires Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson both have space exploration companies in Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic, respectively. Gates has poured billions into vaccine research and delivery around the world … [Read more...] about Bill Gates takes aim at Elon Musk: I’d rather fund vaccines than go to Mars

Mark Zuckerberg talks mixed reality on Meta Quest 3
Forward-looking: As Meta's metaverse division, Reality Labs, threw another few billion dollars into the furnace last quarter, the company presses forward with VR products. Those include the next Meta Quest headset, set to succeed the popular Meta Quest 2 when it launches later this year. Meta's Q4 2022 earnings call included new information about the company's next VR headset. Likely to be called the Meta Quest 3, Meta wants the device to be a relatively accessible vehicle for its mixed reality ambitions. The $1,500 Meta Quest Pro, which Meta launched last October, includes it as a primary feature. TrackingPoint turns to crowdsourcing to pick next Linux-powered rifle
Back in March, Ars spent some time at the shooting range with Austin-based TrackingPoint and its $17,000 Linux-powered rifles . The company sells three different models of bolt-action hunting rifles equipped with big, computerized tracking scopes that use lasers and predictive algorithms to reliably land rounds on moving targets as far away as 1,000 yards with relative ease. TrackingPoint's offerings are moving very briskly; almost the entire production run for this year has been presold. Its initial offerings are limited to long-range bolt-action hunting rifles; the weapons' size and mass (and cost!) make them impractical to use for pretty much anything other than long-distance hunting. However, the huge popularity of the "precision guided firearm" means that TrackingPoint's next application of the technology could go in any number of directions. The military, the FBI, and many police department SWAT teams have shown interest in TrackingPoint's weapon systems, and the technology … [Read more...] about TrackingPoint turns to crowdsourcing to pick next Linux-powered rifle
Google is ready to take on ChatGPT – and we’ll see its AI masterplan any day now
Audio player loading… Google has been under growing pressure from ChatGPT and Microsoft in the past few months, and it seems to have finally snapped – the search giant has announced an AI-themed event for February 8, and said its chatbot rival will launch very soon. The 'Google presents: Live from Paris' (opens in new tab) event will be livestreamed at 8.30am ET / 1.30pm GMT (which works out as 12.30 AEST for those in Australia). And Google says the theme will be "reimagining how people search for, explore and interact with information", through "Search, Maps and beyond". While that description doesn't specifically reference the kind of AI chatbot technology we've seen from ChatGPT, the event tallies with some bold statements made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai during the company's recent earnings call (opens in new tab) . On the call, Pichai said that "AI is the most profound technology we are working on today" and that AI is reaching an "inflection point". … [Read more...] about Google is ready to take on ChatGPT – and we’ll see its AI masterplan any day now
